Birthday celebration was a thing for the ajebos (rich kids). That's what we used to believed. Am from an average family financial wise. celebrating a birthday was considered a luxury.
My memorable birthday was the one I had the year I finished my primary school. Even though memorable may not be the perfect word to use, but I have a course to always remember that birthday whenever I think about birthdays. I think I was nine (9) years old , the month I finished my primary school, and luckily for me, aunty rosemary visited my mom and was to stay for two weeks. One evening I over heard aunt rosemary and my mom having a conversation, " when was lucky born?" aunt rosemary asked. " I think 10th or 14th August, but check (pointing at a drawer) inside the drawer for his immunization card , the date is there so as to be sure of the date" my mom replied. I was not sure why they were asking about my birth date, until I heard them planning how my birthday celebration is going To be, especially as I was finishing my primary school the same month as my birth day.
I over heard the conversation on the 2th of August and the 10th of August was taking too long to reach for me. The 10th was to be on Saturday my birthday. Every of my friends in school and at home had heard of the birthday. My friends had increased drastically that week, and who wouldn't want to be a friend with the birthday celebrant, especially as there is going to be cake, soft drinks and other goodies, and being a friend with the celebrant confers added advantage to you.
Typical of an August rain was the down pour that Saturday morning of my birthday , my prayer remains that the rain should stop before 12:pm before the time for my birthday celebration which was 2:pm. God so kind, the rain stopped before that time. I was wearing a beautiful lace clothe , my school friends, some children in my area and some few adult were also present in our house for my birthday celebration.
The table was set, and a bread kept on the middle of the table which served as the cake, biscuits, Miranda, Pepsi and Coca-Cola were all kept round the cake and I was standing in front of the cake grinning from ear to ear filled with happiness as they sang a birthday song to me. Happy birthday to you 🎵🎵🎵 happy birthday to you 🎵🎵🎵happy birthday to you lucky.... 🎵🎵🎵happy birthday to you.
That happened to be my memorable birthday ever, even though that's the only birthday people gathered to celebrate with me.
