There is no child from my generation in Baire who does not keep a photo in front of the apostle in his family album. On every February 24 or August 24, Popular Festivities of Baire found there the best place in the park to pose in front of the Chamber of Lalo or Damián.
The statue of Martí located in places and public spaces, has witnessed the passage of time and life of countless boys and girls who, as part of a beautiful tradition, posed in front of it to immortalize their childhood. This custom, which might seem simple, represents much more than a photographic moment; It is a ritual that connects new generations with their history and cultural heritage.
The scene was a palpable emotion in the children, and the click of the camera captured the image. For many, that photograph not only marked a moment, but evoked a sense of belonging and continuity in history.Being in front of Martí's sculpture, the little ones were not only participating in a family tradition, but were linking their lives with that of a national hero, an idealist who fought for freedom and justice. That symbolic connection granted a deep meaning to a seemingly trivial moment.
Over time, however, this custom has been disappearing. The evolution of technology, the speed of modern life and the change of priorities in society have contributed to the new generations seeking immediacy instead of rituals that foster reflection and the link with the past.Today, few young people stop to be photographed in front of the statue of Martí, and this loss marks a distance with the story that is unfortunate.
But well I don't want to make this a nostalgic tradition, but an opportunity to reconnect with our roots. In a globalized world where identities are usually diluted, rescuing these moments can be used to strengthen the sense of belonging and historical awareness in the youngest. The figure of Martí, with his legacy of love for the homeland and the struggle for equity, remains relevant and deserves to be remembered and celebrated.
Although the tradition of photographs in front of the statue of José Martí can be in decline, its meaning endures.Remembering and reliving these customs allows us to honor those who preceded us and, at the same time, reaffirm our own identity as Cubans in a constant change. The story, after all, is not just a story of past events; It is the thread that unites each generation with its legacy.Rescuing that tradition could be an important step towards a future that values and respects its own history.
