Do athletes deserve to get pay as much as they do in what they play? Now that basketball trades are about to be underway some big name stars have opted to switch teams. It is by NBA rules that players who stick with their team is allow to earn more than if they move to a different one. Yet if the team they are playing for is unwilling to pay out players will likely jump ship.
We are talking about millions and millions of dollars for each of these players. The skills and or talents they bring to the sport has evolved over the years but to say a top star with max contract today can be +35mil a year or more, depending on how many years in the league, versus maybe just twenty years ago where +10mil a year was big is somewhat lacking.
I do believe stars deserve what the get as they bring in ticket revenue and increases a cities population entertainment spending. But at what point in the consumers life, aka average fan, is willing to pay to watch a NBA game?
Today the difference between NBA salaries are much more than past years and continue to rise. Once revenue reaches peak, if it ever comes to that, players salary will hit a cap. Of course with rules of inflation the NBA has made it a limit on how much a player can earn. Still the limit is hit by top stars as like the ones in this years list. Irving, Durant,
Murray, Thompson, Russell and the list goes a few more... all these players are potentially signing max contracts and even more grand Klay Thompson is signing a super max contract as his original team is willing to pay him huge dollars for his service. $190 mil for 5 years to be exact.
Although salaries have ballooned that even without max contracts some players can reach $100mil in contracts is insane. But fans feed into this frenzy. Just read about Knicks fans complaining in twitter on owner James Dolan for not offering more to get Durant. Knicks fans complain to Dolan on Durant The fans are contributing to this craze and as long as that continues max contracts are here to stay.
