I've had lots of experience in life; I can very well say that life has shown me a lot of shege. And this is not even a joking matter. And of the many experiences I've had, one that stood out the most and that really changed me was when I went through a difficult period in life. It came in the form of sickness, not your regular kind of headache and malaria; nah, this is way deeper. And it was one that didn't just deal with me; it also took a lot of my time. I was just at a place hoping for the best or the worst while life and everything inside of it were moving on.
And that was when I actually learned to never take anything for granted, most especially my health. I don't joke with it. Not as if I didn't take it seriously before, but since then, I've even taken it more seriously. Being healthy, being able to turn around on the bed, being able to walk without support, and all of that are things we often take for granted. Well, life made me appreciate all of these things more because a time came when none of it mattered; even if it did, there was no way I could be a part of it because of what I was facing.
And about people becoming better versions of themselves. I would want to say that it's all a matter of choice. It's our decisions. I agree that experiences and such have the ability to change us, but we can decide either to be a better person or not. I say this because before I fell sick, I was a very friendly, jovial, and kind guy. During my illness, things began to change, especially as I began to see how some people seem to not care and distance themselves. Then when I got better, I started turning out cold; I didn't want to relate with anyone or have anything close with anybody. Along the line, I realized that what I went through is changing me, and I'm allowing it. Not as if anybody would have blamed me if I turned out cold or heartless; what I went through should be enough as a reason for me, but I decided against it.
And talking about age, for me it is not just about age. The fact that a person is getting older doesn't mean they would get smarter, wiser, or better. Just like me, experience has a lot to teach us; it is left for us to learn from it and know what exactly it is we want to do. Either become better or not.
Life has not become perfect, but I have become more grateful, more patient, and more determined. Sometimes, the experiences we wish we could avoid are the same experiences that teach us how to live.
