When I look at myself from five or ten years ago, I sometimes notice how much has changed. The way I think, the things I care about, and even the way I react to certain situations are not exactly the same anymore. As we grow older, life happens to us in different ways, and these things can change us.
One of the biggest reasons people change is because of their experiences. Life does not teach us only through good moments. The difficult times also have a way of teaching us. Sometimes, we make mistakes and learn from them. Other times, we go through things we never expected and come out stronger. Little by little, these experiences affect the way we think and deal with life.
Responsibilities also play a big part. When we were younger, life was much simpler. We could spend our time having fun without thinking too much about tomorrow. But as we grow older, things like work, bills, family and other responsibilities start coming in. When people begin to depend on you, you cannot continue doing things anyhow. You start thinking more before making decisions.
The people we meet can also change us. Some friends we thought would remain in our lives forever may eventually leave. Some people may disappoint us, while others may stay and become like family. With time, we begin to understand people better. We become more careful about the people we trust and the kind of people we keep close. Sometimes, it is not because we think we are better than others. We have simply learnt to protect our peace.
Our priorities also change as we grow. There was a time when impressing people or trying to prove a point could be very important to us. As we get older, those things may no longer matter that much. We start thinking more about peace, family, having a stable life, doing well at work and becoming a better person.
Growing older also helps us understand ourselves better. We begin to know what we like and what we don't like. We understand the things that make us happy and the things we cannot tolerate anymore. Because of this, we may become more careful with our choices and the people we allow into our lives.
I don't think changing means that a person has become a completely different person. Sometimes, the person is still the same, but life has given them more understanding. They have seen things they had never seen before, made mistakes, learnt lessons and gained more experience.
So, when someone says, "I have changed," it may simply mean that they have learnt something from life.
Growing older does not automatically make someone a better person. Some people go through many experiences but refuse to learn from them. But when a person is willing to admit their mistakes, learn from what they have gone through and make better choices, they can become wiser and calmer with time.
