Well, I won't want to beat around the bush, as I've come to realize that saving the environment is not something we leave for some set of people. The environment first of all is that space near us, around us. Talking of our streets, gutters, backyard, the market, our school and all those places close to us.
One of the things we often overlook is cleanliness, we most times complain of things like flood and the likes, still we keep disposing of nylons, bottles and all into gutters and inappropriate places. And when the rain falls, we blame those in the government sector as if they were the cause of the blocked drainages. That single bottle and nylon we throw away or drop carelessly matter. We can do better than that, there's nothing bad in holding onto whatever we want to dispose of till we see a thrash bin.
Another thing I would love to talk about is the things that we buy. While getting stuffs, we should always get them thinking about long-term. Most times, we get stuffs that are of low quality. Talk of low quality electronics, disposable plates that we use for events, amongst others and we dump them off. Why don't we get few but much more better/quality things. And at times, most of these things we throw away can be recycled, or even given to tailors, radionics, cobblers and the likes who can still fix it.
Now let's talk about electricity/energy. We most times complain about how unstable and all the light is, but still we are not in any way helping ourselves, home and environment. We leave the lights on when we are not home, we don't switch off our appliances and electronics, we just go out and leave them all on. These are things that are little but then, they help us not just save cost but as well reduce fire accidents and accidents caused by electricity.
Another problem is food wastage. At parties we cook too much, even in our homes we cook too much and end up throwing away the leftovers. We can do better by planning well and measuring whatever we will be cooking, and if it happens to still be excess, we can share with neighbors or those that did not have.
All those might look somehow, but believe me they are the little ways we can start that will go a long way in helping us save our environment.
And in conclusion, I would like to add that we should as well teach out kids early, we as elders and their parents should teach them by examples. They shouldn't see us disposing off things anyhow, rather they should see us doing our best to keep the environment tidy.
