We are in the era of social media, and almost everyone today is trying to do one thing or the other on the media space. That is why wherever you go or turn to you will definitely see someone taking pictures or recording a video or even live streaming. And aside from all of that, people who go to work at event centers as photographers or videographers will definitely take pictures and do videos of you that you're not aware of. The same goes to journalist too who could be covering a news and such.
And since the topic made use do the word "public space," I really do not see anything bad in it. If I get tro see myself online either in persons picture or video which I'm not aware of when it was taken, I won't count it, honestly. It just obvious it is accidental, anyone could have been passing at that time, and it could have been anyone, so to me it shouldn't be a crime. Public space or public places are places open to everyone. Most of the time, those recording or taking pictures aren't even paying attention to the passers by and all, they are most times focused on what they are actually capturing.
Go to our markets, motor parks, church, events and all today and see how people take pictures, do videos and livestream. Even on the road. Do you expect a videographer or content creator to ask each and everyone for consent before going ahead to do what he or she wants to do. It is not possible, hundreds and thousands of people are usually in public spaces, even this people we are talking about are not usually one in a public space, you even find them videoing and capturing themselves unintentionally at times. So how will such a law exist talk more or work.
Now, in as much as I see nothing wrong with it ther should be limit. Meaning that such videos or pictures must not b sued to spread lies, sway the public, embarrass me or promote something I know absolutely nothing about. If it breaches any of that, then I think such cns be seen as a crime and the law can take it full course. Now, I'm saying that because I came across a video online about two years ago where a young lady was seen shouting and promoting her business in a public space while claiming that all the crowd behind her were there to patronize her and can testify to the authenticity on what she's selling.
Meanwhile, nshe actually had her goods there, but something happened right in front of where she displayed her goods by the roadside, and because everyone came to see what was happening the place became crowded and she used that opportunity to quickly sway everyone online. You will agree with me that such content is misleading, because innocent people are being used to sell a false story. She sells what the call "kanyamata" now imagine if a woman's face got captured in it and her husband whose home got to see it, it would have led to misunderstandings and all before anyone would know the woman wasn't patronizing her.
So, the issue isn't appearing in a public video and such, the real issue is how such picture or video is being used. If it is harmless then it is fine, but if it is being used to rob people, sway the public, or damage my reputation then it is a crime.
