Speaking in tongues is a divine gift from the Holy Spirit, given to believers as a sign of God’s power. It is biblically supported, and everyone who truly believes in Jesus Christ can receive the ability to speak in tongues. This is affirmed in Mark 16:17, which says:
“And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues.”
When a person speaks in tongues, they are empowered by the Holy Spirit to speak in languages they have never learned. This mirrors the experience of the disciples on the day of Pentecost. While praying, they suddenly spoke in various foreign languages languages that the people around them clearly understood, even though the disciples themselves had never studied them. This amazed the crowd, because each person heard the disciples speaking in their own native tongue.
According to the book of Act 2:7 “And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these who speak Galilaeans?"
2:8 " And how do we hear every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?”
Therefore, speaking in tongues involves speaking real languages inspired by the Holy Spirit, not invented sounds or self-created expressions. It is a heavenly language or a divinely enabled earthly language, given for prayer, praise, and spiritual edification.
Speaking in tongues is a precious gift from God, an evidence of His presence and a blessing to those who believe.
