“Did you just hear that Max?” Mary asked, looking at her dog, who in turn looked petrified. It was a snowy day and she was snuggled up in a chair with her blanket.
The loud thud from upstairs came again. She was sure to be alone in her house. Her parents and the boys were out for a snow skating competition which she wasn't interested in.
“You wanna go check it out?” She asked, tapping max as a sign of sending him to find what it was.
But instead her cowardly dog snuck herself under the blanket Mary had covered herself with.
“Right, I should have known I'll be the one to protect myself. Even though I've got a dog” she said.
Max whimpered.
Grabbing a club at the back of her couch, Mary stood up after making a sign of the cross she quietly tiptoed upstairs.
Suddenly, the back door blew open.
She quickly swung her club in that direction “Who's there?!” She asked, but no one answered.
Gently she tiptoed to the door peered outside but there was no one in sight, except for the snowstorm that was heavily building outside. She quickly locked the door and made for the couch when the loud thud from upstairs came again. She froze in her tracks, shaking to the bones.
“Okay, enough of this nonsense. Let's find who's upstairs” she said, staring at Max who still had her face buried deep in the blanket whimpering.
Mary summoned courage and walked bravely to the rooms upstairs. She started by checking her parents room and it was quiet like a graveyard, same with the boys room as she was about locking the second room, she heard the loud bang from the third room which happened to be her own room.
She clenched tightly to her club, walked over to the door and gently opened the room to see the chaos going on inside. Her room was a mess.
She had unintentionally left her window open on a snowstorm, and a scurry of squirrels apparently seeking shelter from the storm had snuck in and made themselves comfortable.
“Oh no. Not today” she exclaimed disappointment laced in her voice.
She closed the door, walked back downstairs and phoned 911. She clearly knew she wasn't going to be able to send those squirrels away herself as she was scared of squirrels.
A few minutes later the police came over and in a few hours of work, they announced her room free of squirrels.
Mary smiled and promised to be careful next time not to leave her windows open in a snow storm
