The Missing Piece
A while back, during the pandemic, I was putting together a jigsaw puzzle I found in my closet. I remembered that when I put it away, it was complete and then forgotten. The kids grew up, entertainment evolved alongside technology, and that world I had built with interlocking pieces was never fully realized. It turns out that while dusting off my board games to keep myself entertained during those anxious, stressful, and stay-at-home days, I found a world-themed puzzle and wanted to put it together. There are so many pieces, so it wasn't easy to complete it in a single day. I know puzzles are usually for younger people, but like them, I also needed to rediscover patience, distraction, concentration, how to make sound decisions and find practical solutions, and how to disconnect from social media and the awful news that only brought me anguish, anxiety, and a great deal of mental turmoil.
The days went by and my mess remained scattered. After assembling borders, arranging mountains of pieces by color, and starting to fit pieces together, I was suddenly able to give shape to my world. But what frustration I felt when I discovered that I was missing a piece! I searched, I turned everything upside down, but I found nothing. I put it together, but I was left with that emptiness that something was missing. However, I was certain that everything has a solution and a purpose.
The image our friend
@lanzjoseg shared this week took me back to that moment, but also allowed me to look at it from a different perspective. I thought about so many people who lost a loved one in the pandemic—a family member, a friend, a neighbor. They not only experienced frustration but also immense emotional pain. They saw them battle Covid-19, did everything possible to help them survive, and lost the battle. The survivors, however, were left with anger, guilt, pain, and sadness. They learned to live with that loss, incomplete because a part of them went with their loved one. They remain here without answers, without fitting in, unsatisfied, like a missing piece of life's puzzle. They will never be whole again. All they can do is trust in the promises of our Lord Jesus Christ, living their lives with that emptiness in their hearts. Little by little, they returned to calm, taking shape again piece by piece, without despair. They learned to trust, to search and find the right place, but they know that the piece they lost in that pandemic will never fit again, nor will there ever be another. Similar, but nothing was ever the same again.
