My first call from a public phone, my cousin, the expert at giving me lessons, gave me the first instruction: "Put it in the slot," referring to the coin I had in my hand. It went from a single slot for small coins to slots for coins of various denominations. Then we progressed and moved on to pre-made cards where the phone slot read the magnetic stripe of the card. Having a CANTV card in your wallet was like having a Samsung Galaxy or a state-of-the-art iPhone.
