Hello friends of the hive, I hope you are doing well. In this post I am going to talk about something very particular that always moves my heart.
I grew up in a very big house, where I lived with two of my aunts, a cousin and her son, my family and my grandfather. My childhood -despite so many things-, was nice, because I always shared with my family and my grandfather always spoiled me.
He used to buy a lot of bread, sweet, salty, stuffed, all kinds of bread, and he knew that my favorite bread was pan de leche, which is a sweet bread made with milk, a little bit crunchy. Here in Venezuela there is a sweet rice-based drink known as chicha; so he used to buy the milk bread with a liter of Chicha Los Andes, and he always gave me a little glass for me.
Also in the evenings I would sit with him in the dining room for dinner, and although we didn't talk, it was nice company. He didn't like to eat alone either, and he always told me: "Son, come eat with me ".
He had nicknames for every grandchild in the family, he used to call me cocoya, because I crawled like a kind of turtle.
Finally when my family and I moved to another house, it affected him a lot because we were always the ones who kept him company. Who he would sit and talk to in the evenings about so many interesting things, because my grandfather in spite of his age, had a very bright mind and could talk to you about anything, and he was very intelligent, he could fix almost anything. Saying goodbye to my grandfather when I moved was very difficult, because we were not moving cities and it would be more difficult to see him.
Then he got sick, he could no longer drive, and he had to stop doing many things, like playing softball, which was his favorite sport.
You may wonder what makes me sad? It is to see so many grandpas and grandmas alone on the street, to see how hard it is for them to be at an ATM and drive, to see how difficult it is to carry such heavy bags, how they are rushed on public transportation - at least here in Venezuela - to get on or off quickly, to see how the pharmacy workers make fun of them when they ask for a medicine and sometimes they do not know why they are asking for it.
It makes me sad to think how there are so many young people being cruel to older people, thinking that they will never reach that age, that they will never grow old....
I have always said, aging is a virtue.
Put yourselves in their shoes, they have been in this life for a long time, the least they deserve is a good treatment.
