Good evening, Hive friends! It's a pleasure to greet you and share with you. This time, I'll share how the workshop I attended last week at work went. It was about the use and handling of fire extinguishers, a very important safety topic that we should all know, or at least have a basic understanding of.

We started with the terms fire and conflagration, the elements of fire, which also form the fire triangle. This explains how fire is produced: heat, fuel, and oxygen. Heat is responsible for the initial ignition of the fire. Fuel is any material that can burn, and oxygen is essential. Air contains approximately 21% oxygen, and most fires require at least 16% to burn.

We also talked about the types of fire: Class A fires are those involving wood, paper, cardboard, fabric, plastics, among others; Class B fires involve paints, gasoline, and petroleum; Class C fires involve electrical equipment or installations; Class D fires involve sodium, potassium, magnesium, and aluminum, among other substances; and Class K fires involve cooking oils and fats.

Next, we move on to the definition of a fire extinguisher, which is a device containing an extinguishing agent. This agent can be any physical or chemical substance used to extinguish a fire through the action of internal pressure. To use a fire extinguisher, it's very important to identify the type of fire to determine the correct extinguisher. For example, for a Class C fire, which is electrical, never use a water extinguisher (often with anti-corrosive or wetting agents) pressurized with nitrogen. This type of extinguisher is specifically for Class A fires.

The most common type of fire extinguisher is the ABC extinguisher, also known as dry chemical powder. It's used in homes, offices, commercial buildings, and vehicles because it extinguishes three types of fires: Class A, Class B, and Class C. After the workshop, we conducted a quiz covering all the material. It was divided into two parts, and it was important to assess whether the participants had retained the information and found it engaging and informative.
