It was just another day in the courtroom office, where every day we tried to finish organizing the files according to the subjects, dates, and priority for the judge.
It seemed to be a never-ending process, as when we managed to clear the surface of the desk, thousands of new folders would arrive and everything would be back to the same.
My colleague was tired, as she had also been assigned to assist the judge during the day's session. She was tasked with summarizing the day, and on that very day, she had agreed to meet with her ex-partner to retrieve some items that were left at their house, which were of great importance to her.
I offered to help her, but the judge was firm, stating that the assistant should be the one to prepare the report. While everyone else was leaving at closing time, Violeta was in front of the computer trying to finish as quickly as possible. I suggested going to receive the belongings in her place, but she shook her head as a couple of tears escaped and slid down her face.
An hour later, she had finished, but a power outage just before saving the file elicited a piercing scream, prompting the security personnel to rush to the office immediately. Violeta, who had screamed in despair, was then left paralyzed, with a distant look in her eyes, and upon regaining her senses, she only took her purse before leaving.
Neither the judge's shouts nor the belongings she wanted to retrieve could stop her as she descended the stairs, darkened by the blackout.
There was a loud thud, and when we managed to reach the stairs, we saw Violeta's body, who had fallen in her haste to escape everything, staring into the distance, with the expression of someone who had escaped from a miserable life.
