Overview/Resumen

An evil witch living in a castle near a forest would transform into an owl by day and a witch by night; she lured all manner of animals to her castle to devour them, as well as beautiful maidens whom she would turn into turtledoves. One day, while Yorinda—the town's most beautiful young woman—and her fiancé Yoringuel were out for a walk, poor Yorinda was transformed into a bird; to make matters worse, Yoringel was powerless to help her—he could not even weep, for he was spellbound and frozen in place—but the witch eventually broke the spell and ordered him to leave, ignoring his pleas and tears for his beloved.

However, when he left and arrived in another village, he dreamed of a beautiful red flower with a pearl at its center; upon waking, he set out to search for it in every meadow, mountain, and forest until he found it. Once he had it, he proceeded to break the spells cast by the wicked witch on everyone—including his beloved—for anything the flower touched was freed from the witch's power.

My Opinion/Mi Opinión

Once again, true love acts as a guide and a driving force that propels the hero and unleashes his protective instinct; love knows no boundaries, never abandons, and never gives up—on the contrary, it grows stronger through perseverance. And speaking of perseverance, this story once again demonstrates that it is the key to success.

In this story, the Brothers Grimm once again rely on symbolism: the forest, the witch, and her evil spells represent the dangers of the world to which we are all exposed, while Yoringel’s resilience and perseverance—combined with the red rose that breaks the witch’s evil spells—symbolize the faith and hope that shine amidst the darkness to find salvation.

In conclusion, it is a beautiful love story that speaks of resilience and perseverance, and of love as the force that drives everything; it differs from other Brothers Grimm tales, which typically recount events involving grotesque elements or situations intended to teach a lesson.
