Today I want to analyze one of the most popular stories by the Brothers Grimm, Cinderella, because it is not that more romanticized vision that Disney offered us, with the glass slipper and the funny scene with the evil stepsisters.
Hoy quiero hacer un análisis a uno de los cuentos más populares de los hermanos Grimm, La Cenicienta, pues no se trata de esa visión más romantizada que Disney nos ofreció, con la zapatilla de cristal y la escena graciosa con las hermanastras malvadas.
Overview/Resumen
Cenicienta solía ser una niña tanto hermosa como feliz, sin embargo cuando su madre murió, su padre volvió a casarse, pero en esta ocasión con una mujer malvada que tenía un par de hijas feas, arrogantes y malas. Tras la muerte del padre de Cenicienta, la madrastra y las hermanastras toman posesión de todos los bienes que por derecho le correspondían a la legitima hija, además la obligan a trabajar para ellas y debido a que ella casi siempre estaba llena de cenizas comenzaron a llamarla "Cenicienta". En una ocasión el príncipe organizó un baile de tres para encontrar una esposa, sin embargo la madrastra y hermanastras de Cenicienta le prohíben a ella asistir al baile, Cenicienta entonces llora desconsoladamente sobre la tumba de su madre, sin embargo un pájaro mágico se conduele de su dolor y le otorga vestidos de oro y plata para que ella asista al baile.
Cinderella attended the ball and had a wonderful time those three days, but on the very last day, she ran away, and one of her golden slippers—not glass—got stuck in the tar between the steps. Later, the prince tried the slipper on all the women in the village to try and find Cinderella. Since the slipper didn't fit either of the stepsisters, they, encouraged by their mother, cut off parts of their feet to try to fit into the shoes (one cut off her heel and the other a toe). However, the prince discovered the deception when he saw the blood. Finally, after trying on the slipper, Cinderella married the prince, and the two stepsisters received a cruel punishment: birds pecked out their eyes.
Cenicienta asistió al baile y se divirtió mucho esos tres días, pero justo el último, ella huye y una de sus zapatillas de oro, no de cristal, se queda pegada en la brea de las juntas de la escalera. Posteriormente el príncipe le prueba esa zapatilla a todas las mujeres del pueblo para tratar de encontrar a Cenicienta. Como las zapatillas no le quedaban a ninguna de las hermanastras ellas, alentadas por su madre, se cortan una parte del pie para que pueda entrar en el calzado (una se corta el talón y la otra un dedo) sin embargo el príncipe descubrió el engaño al ver la sangre. Finalmente, tras probarse la zapatilla Cenicienta se casa con el príncipe y las dos hermanastras reciben un cruel castigo pues unas aves devoran sus ojos.
My Opinion/Mi Opinión
German fairy tales often teach lessons in a drastic and graphic way. In this case, the envy, malice, and vile actions of the stepsisters were punished terribly, as is almost always the case in the stories of the Brothers Grimm. This is why the story has many toned-down versions; children of later generations couldn't bear something so grotesque. Another striking aspect of the story is the protagonist herself. Many might judge her for not trying to escape her miserable situation at the mercy of her stepsisters and stepmother, but to be completely honest, what options did a girl have more than two hundred years ago? You either ended up in a convent, married to whoever asked for your hand, or, in the worst case, in a brothel. So, taking all this into account, Cinderella was actually very brave and resilient, enduring everything she experienced in that house that was rightfully hers.
Los cuentos de hadas alemanes suelen aleccionar de una manera drástica y muy grafica, de esta manera, la envidia, la maldad y las viles acciones de las hermanastras fueron castigadas de una manera terrible, como casi siempre suele pasar en las historias de los hermanos Grimm, y esta es la razón por la cuál la historia tuvo muchas versiones más suavizadas, y es que los niños de generaciones posteriores no podrían soportar algo tan grotesco, y otra cosa que llama la atención de la historia es la propia protagonista en sí, muchos podrían juzgarla por no intentar huir de su miserable situación a merced de sus hermanastras y madrastra, pero siendo completamente honestos ¿Qué opciones tenía una chica hace más de doscientos años? o terminabas en un convento, o casada con cualquiera que pidiera tu mano o en el peor de los casos un burdel, así que tomando en cuenta todo esto, Cenicienta más bien fue muy valiente y resiliente, soportando todo lo que vivió en esa casa que por derecho le pertenecía.
Something I really liked is that instead of the fairy godmother we saw in later versions, here what acts in Cinderella's favor is the magic of nature itself, and also all the elements that were there, at her mother's grave (the birds that were in the tree next to the grave). I think this is very beautiful because it represents filial love, the emotional and blood ties that last forever, beyond death itself; it's as if Cinderella's own mother were helping her daughter from beyond the grave.
Algo que me gustó mucho es que en lugar del hada madrina que vimos en versiones posteriores, aquí lo que actúa en favor de Cenicienta es la magia misma de la naturaleza, y además son todos lo elementos que estaban allí, en la tumba de su madre (los pájaros que estaban en el árbol junto a la tumba) creo que esto es muy bello porque representa el amor filial, los lazos afectivos y sanguíneos que perduran por siempre, más allá de la propia muerte, es como si la propia madre de Cenicienta socorriera a su hija desde el más allá.
