Hi there! Today I want to share a bit about my day with you. It was one of those days where everything seemed to go wrong; no matter what was done, things just didn't work out right. My dad went out on an errand looking for an important spare part for his car; not only did he fail to find it, but he was also told he’d be better off buying a new one. Meanwhile, my sister was making a transaction on her Amazon account when it was suddenly shut down—so she lost both the purchase and the money. There was a lot of stress—way too much stress—and to top it all off, just as I was feeling inspired and hard at work, the one thing happened that all Venezuelans hate and can never get used to, no matter how much time passes: the power went out. Oh well, nothing to be done about it—you have to make the best of a bad situation. So, my sister and I hopped on her motorized scooter to go grocery shopping, but we decided not to head straight back home. Instead, we wanted to spend the afternoon doing something different—trying to de-stress by connecting with nature and hoping things would improve later on—so we headed to Negra Hipólita Park, located in the northern part of the city of Valencia.
Lying there on the grass, watching people pass by and feeling the gentle breeze, you learn patience. I won’t lie to you: generally speaking, I don’t enjoy spending much time in nature, nor am I the most patient person in the world—in fact, I’m quite the opposite. But every now and then, I do like feeling connected to nature, because, after all, we are all a part of it. I relaxed as I watched the park rangers’ horses go by, enjoying the fresh air.
We sat in the shade of a large tree—having positioned ourselves right behind the woods, one of the coolest parts of the park—and from there we could see fruit trees (including some mango trees) in the distance, where the woods give way to open meadow; right behind us stood the stables (sometimes when I visit that park, I like to stop by the stables to take a look at the horses kept there—they are beautiful).
In that park, it is common to see many animal species—a great number of birds (especially parrots) and reptiles (above all iguanas), as well as many rodents like capybaras (popularly known in Venezuela as *chigüires*) and countless squirrels. Just then—as if summoned by my very thoughts—one of them scurried past me. I got up from the ground intending to take a picture, but—as you know—those animals are incredibly elusive; it scrambled up the fence and started to flee. The only halfway-decent shot I managed to get was when I pretended to hold something in my hands to grab its attention—and it worked—though the photo ended up being backlit.
Every now and then, this kind of contact does you good—feeling the grass with your hands, breathing the fresh air from the trees, letting the breeze stir your hair, and placing your worries or concerns in God’s hands to let Him take care of them. Fortunately, the very next day, at least one of our problems was resolved; the truth is, we should sometimes view these moments as necessary pauses—times for reflection, dedicated to God, to yourself, and to the nature from which you come.
I know it can be hard—speaking as someone who, to be honest, tends to lean toward pessimism—but it is truly worth investing more time in gratitude than in complaining; complaints only make us feel worse, more powerless, and more incapable, whereas being grateful for what we already have paves the way for success and blessings.
