Today I sent out a Substack newsletter titled 'The Programming Under the Official Story.' The piece is about half material from this blog and half new stuff. It considers the challenge of communicating effectively with people who have internalized an official story that in many respects is nonsense. I resisted the urge to go on and on dryly about epistemology. Instead, I tried to focus on the nature of control regime programming and some implications of that programming.
Having skipped last week's newsletter, it was good to get the new one out. I haven't been writing as much lately. In part I've been busy with other things, but I'm also in an unusual place creatively. My Substack so far is a nice crash course on systemic problems but I'm not sure where it should go next. And it's the end of summer so the news has been totally lame.
Beyond this, it feels like something is brewing on a deeper level. Like someday soon I'll stumble into a great burst of inspired motivation. I can almost sense the shape of that effort, though I don't yet apprehend its essence. These things happen in their own time.
Another factor in my creative process is my upcoming birthday. Consciously, I feel very neutral about the event. It does however have me reflecting on the past year. My level of productivity has been high. I wrote a book and hundreds of blog posts and did a bunch of other stuff too. If I'm half as productive this next year that would still be a lot.
Maybe the biggest question is what book I want to write in the year to come. I have vague ideas about a new scifi novel but have yet to find the right way to tell the story. The idea is to use magic as a metaphor to explore systems theory. In order to make this entertaining, I need good characters, which I don't have yet.
The easy solution is always to just model the characters after people that I know. And I do some of that in all of my books. Yet I prefer main characters that are more original. I might also feel weird about making someone I know a villain.
Overall, I feel like I'm floating in a pond of half-formed ideas. It's not a bad place to be and it's temporary. All part of the creative process.
