Before they even see you
they spring to their feet
waiting to greet you
without missing a beat
with a wag of that tail
that cold wet nose
the running in circles
as their excitement grows
they lend us their strength
when we're not up to the task
curl up at our feet --
we don't even have to ask
we provide them a home
a warm place to sleep
toys to play fetch
and plenty to eat
they can warn us of danger
protect us from harm
put a smile on our face
with such skill and charm
and when they misbehave
it's quickly resolved
with one sloppy kiss
their transgressions absolved
they make our world better
with no effort at all
quick to respond
when they hear you call
and when we hear
they've been abused
we feel their pain --
our humanity bruised
they always forgive us
become our best friend
feel your moods
don't know how to offend
they don't care about
our color, race or creed
immune to things
like hatred and greed
they're part of our families
add light to our heart
trust in our kindness
right from the start
above all the rest
they possess an ability
to supply us with love
