Nestled in the Southern Alps of New Zealand, Wanaka is one of the most beautiful places in New Zealand. The surrounding landscape makes for a breathtaking view of the mountains, lakes, and valleys. One of the most popular attractions in Wanaka is Mount Roys Peak.
Roys Peak is a popular mountain hike located in Wanaka New Zealand. Located at the northern end of Wanaka, Roys Peak offers breathtaking views of the surrounding lakes and alpine meadows. The mountain rises to a height of 1,578 metres above sea level and is one of the most difficult mountains to climb in New Zealand. The climb to the summit can take as little as two hours or as long as six hours depending on physical condition and weather conditions.
The hike up Roys Peak can be quite challenging with steep inclines, slippery surfaces, and narrow paths, but it's worth it once you reach to the summit. The first half of the hike is relatively easy but as you approach Roys Peak, it becomes more strenuous and follows a narrow ridge. This hike is best done in the summer months when it is not too cold, rainy or windy ( Please note that the track is closed from 1 October to 10 November every year for lambing). Be sure to bring enough food and water as there may not be any nearby.
The winding gravel road leading to the top is surrounded by native flora and tussock grasslands. Along the way there are also incredible views of Lake Wanaka and Mount Aspiring National Park.
After more than 3 hours climbing up the track and keep telling myself that "It's almost to the top, just a little bit more, keep going." I finally did it!. As soon as I got to the top, all the fatigue on the way climbing up here was suddenly gone, instead I was overwhelmed by how amazing the views from the top of Roys Peak can be. Being able to view this spectacular scenery from this altitude was an unforgettable experience of mine.
