In 2002, Mariah married the love of her life. She was 21, and he was 24.25. That marriage was not only a painful failure, but also plagued by domestic abuse from her husband, alcohol abuse, and, in short, a child experimenting.
Mariah is reading this conversation today, 33 years later, on Instagram. She is amazed at her ex-husband's interest in reconnecting with her in the midst of his midlife crisis, partly because he now lives in another country, and partly out of ego, since Mariah's handling of things over the years has been impeccable.
Despite Mariah's initial pangs of joy upon reading him, greeting her for the first time, after two conversations, it's obvious to her that his heart has been healed and restored by God, to the point that she could see the red flags from the start. Without deifying him, she had a friendly conversation, setting boundaries with someone she thought she'd never be able to get over.
Last night, he texted her at 1:30 a.m.
She was tired, exhausted, and opened the conversation with the intention of leaving him on read and setting a boundary.
This morning, he asked for photos of their wedding and announced his soon-to-be visit to the country. She cheerfully said, "I'll take this opportunity to take some photos with you."
"No. No publicity, please." was his response. "I wish you a safe trip and that your family and loved ones are well. You have my friendship, but trust is earned in private, not in public."
