The two lighthouse

He woke up very confused by the commotion. He was sure his watch shift hadn't started yet. A quick glance up the stairs assured him that the lighthouse was well guarded. He thought that maybe it was a bad dream and pulled the blanket up to his face to sleep again; but the fight that took place at the top of the lighthouse was undeniable. He reached for the rifle he hid under his cot and crept upstairs, determined to put an end to the dispute that had been interrupting his rest for days.
Before reaching the top he could clearly distinguish the voices of a young man who was arguing heatedly with an old man. He climbed the last few steps of the ladder, the light hitting him directly in the eyes, dazzling him, it took the sight of him a moment to get used to the surroundings. He made out the silhouette of a person standing yelling at an old man lying against the railings. He strode over, determined to stop the argument with rifle in hand and tension in his jaw.
-Stop!- He yelled in a bad temper. That one that emerges even from kind people when they are rudely woken up. He paused for a second to look at the young man's clothes. He was wearing a military uniform, the kind he wore many years ago when he enlisted to defend his homeland in war. The young man turned surprised by the interruption. The intense light illuminated his face and without the slightest sign of discomfort he returned her gaze. It was not possible! The guard stepped back when he saw that he was facing a young version and already almost forgotten about his being. He didn't have time to assimilate the position he was in because the young man broke the silence with a question.
-Did we win the war? -Seeing that he didn't answer, the soldier repeated his words with a tone of irritation in his voice. The old man made a vain effort to get up, but his arms failed him and he returned to the cold floor of the catwalk.
-Yes, we won- He finally said.
-So we marry Amanda? – He asked with a cheerful smile and victorious expression.
-Amanda stopped writing her letters a year after leaving. When I returned I discovered that she had married. She didn't wait for us, she just kept going-
-I see. What happened to our plans? Our dreams? The capital and travels? - His expression showed a hint of anger, anger could be seen growing in his eyes.
-I never left town again. I went from job to job and ended up as a security guard. I've been doing it for about 10 years. I conformed or resigned myself to this life. – He said with an apologetic tone in his voice.
His answer provoked an explosion of anger in the young man. If he had been a little closer to him, he might have heard the grinding of his teeth. The atmosphere became heavy and after a few minutes that seemed eternal he returned to speak to the nervous guard.
-Seeing you I finally understand how it is that I will become this pathetic old man. In this bag of worthless bones! - I scream before kicking the poor old man in the ribs who was still on the ground without being able to do anything.
The guard rushed to his defense and with the butt of the rifle dealt the soldier a hard blow to the chest. This barely moved from the site and provided with feline reflexes, he took the weapon before it was out of his reach. They began to struggle, but the youth prevailed and snatched the rifle from him, with which he was now pointing it.
The sound of the weapon made its way quickly into the night, until it was slowly drowned out by the waves. Blood flowed warm between the wool shirt and the throbbing skin. The smell of sea and gunpowder hung in the air. The trigger was pulled a second time, but this time it transported the frightened watchman back to his cot. He woke up drenched in sweat and with a racing pulse. He wiped his forehead with the back of his hand and after regaining the rhythm of his breathing he went out to take a breath.
He traced his course towards the lighthouse, but this time he did not dare to go up, the memory of what happened still shook him. Not knowing that he was driving him, he raised his right hand and pointed to the horizon. He began to turn following the rhythm marked by the light that was born in the heights. He closed his eyes and let himself go. With every turn he took his arm grew hotter. He felt how his flesh and bones burned, it seemed that fire circulated through him. He only stopped when it was impossible for him to stand up. He stayed seated on the grass while he regained his balance. He got up and started walking in the direction the lighthouse had marked him.
Many years have passed since those events, but the sailors of the small fishing village clearly remember the early morning when two lights rose on the cliff. They tell the story to each new sailor who comes to visit the town. The night when two headlights shone, when the watchman disappeared. There are several theories that narrate what became of him. Some say that he vanished, others that he was abducted, others that he was attracted by siren songs, and the list goes on. I like to think that he just went out to recapture his dreams.
