The retail industry is ruthless and they come up with all sorts of sales gimmicks to entice the unsuspecting consumer to support their brand over their competitor’s.
We have recently just had the best gimmick I have seen. My son will disagree with me, but for a change I felt drawn to it more than any other promotion in the past. He loved another promo a lot more that involved animal information cards and a book.
One of the biggest grocery retailers in South Africa - Checkers - recently ran a promo where you got a little seed pod for every R150 you spent. They included 8 herbs, 8 vegetables and 8 flowers in their selection. If you purchase for say R700, you will get 4 seed pods.
The other day I was like R23 short of getting another pod, so I felt compelled to spend the extra R23 by grabbing some chocolate bars for each member of the family…… I mean, how could I lose out on another pod?
By the end of the promotion, I had almost a full set of the variety they offered.... and off course I would get 6 radishes in the mix. I hate radish. Why couldn't I get lucky and get 6 cauliflower pods?
I am bummed that I didn't get the cool tray. Each time I went to Checkers they were sold out.... right from day 1.
The only criticism I had for this campaign is that they brought it out in the South African winter, when 90% of the seedlings need to be planted in Spring. I have kept them and can't wait for Spring! Winter and I have never been friends.
I am looking forward to seeing their next initiative.
