Today I saw my old man cry for the first time in my life, and I think that, it is the saddest thing I've had to see. I'd walked in on him, and he'd tried to hide the tears. I just walked out, decimated. I'll never speak a word of it to him, after all, a man should be allowed to mourn his brother in peace.
It is the funeral of Uncle Williams, and the family is gathered to lay him to rest. Everyone is dressed in black, and It's so sad and gloomy around here. But I have no tears left to cry, I've cried my fair share of tears in the last four months. First, it was Aunt Helen, then Mickey, and now Uncle Williams. Someone, somewhere, must really be angry at me.
Now that I think about it, I agree with Uncle Williams. He'd said he was so tired and needed to rest. Rest, from five long years of war. Battling and fighting cancer for five years could really leave you exhausted, I know I am. The once, vibrant, strong, Uncle Williams. Someone who could take on the world, lying like a vegetable in that casket. That's what cancer does to you, leaves you wasted. After all the time, money, and energy, after everything put into the fight, cancer still won the battle.
It's never easy losing a loved one, I don't know if anyone ever gets used to the pain. This family will never be the same again, we bear the scars from the battle. I've made my peace with it, and now we're saying goodbye. "Goodbye", I never understood why they call it that. There's nothing good about someone you love, leaving and you, knowing that they'll never return. Goodbye is definitely the saddest word I've ever heard.
