I kept the best for last!
When I shared our visit to The Yard Eatery during our Escape to Prison Break Market with you, I had another real heartwarming and encouraging story up my sleeve!
We were running out of time after our gastronomic experience but had to take a walk through the Crafters Shed, and I had the most heartwarming encounter almost at the end of the hall, and what a pleasant surprise was waiting for me!
While walking through the hall, we saw many implements of yester-year.
Remember these old Singer sewing machines? I bet some of you have seen this in your Grandma's home.
A laundry press with something that definitely was used for making shoes next to it.
I may be mistaken, but I do not think this has anything to do with crafts, as I asked a grandpa farmer and his son, and they both say it looks like a grain sieve, but they weren't sure. Anyone who knows this implement?
Local is Lekker ZA
I was drawn into Local is Lekker ZA when I saw this guy happily weaving just outside their entrance. He seemed so content and I simply could not resist taking a peek inside, although my family were ready to leave!
A Proudly Mom of Two Daughters was more than happy to share the story of how this weaving business started. They were showcasing their products at the Prison Break Market, but run an online store and are spreading their wings by letting their weaving business take up roots in other towns as well!
During the bad dark days of Covid, her interior designer daughter was concerned about the number of unemployed people, and had a calling to give back to the community and upskill some of the people who were desperate for work.
Her other daughter is a web designer and designed the stunning logo.
She purchased a couple of old looms and found three men willing to learn the art of weaving.
They discovered one lady who had this rare skill, but she was too old; however she was willing to mentor them.
This young man took eight months to perfect the skill of weaving, using Mohair, Mohair Silk and Kid Yarn from Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape.
Through networking they discovered another lady who had been retrenched in a town where there are very little job opportunities, and so the business is growing and upskilling more and more people.
Her daughter designs the products - scarves, blankets, throws, baskets, rugs, jerseys, teddy bears and even bunnies, @dswigle, but you'll find that on their webpage :)
Quoting from Local is Lekker ZA
If I were to describe myself in one sentence, it would be – big city living with small town values. I grew up in a small town, where neighbors and friends were a huge support system. Throughout my life I have given back to the community… So I PUT MY DREAM INTO ACTION…
I encourage you to read the story in the owner's own words on their webpage
about how this dream was brought to fruition.
I wish them the very best with this awesome business, and will end off with a quote that Mandy shared with me, written by Louisa May Alcock.
This has been my contribution towards @dswigle's #marketfriday where our dear Denise is still hopping the bunny trail!
I'm also on day 8 of my attempt at #Hiveblopomo, an initiative of the awesome bizzy Queen Bee @traciyork, at writing a blog a day for the month of April!
