Yesterday I replied to an auto bot comment which was totally inappropriate and unnecessary (the auto comment, not my reply) given the circumstances of the post in question. The auto comment came from a curation guild and basically says a curator has chosen your post, but we're not going to curate it because you've used reward.app. I was very upset when I saw that comment because I suggested the author use reward.app to get immediate access to funds to support the Ukrainian war.
The curator (a human being) who chose that post for curation responded and apologised for triggering the auto comment.
I responded back to the curator, as you would when you get a comment. It's rude to ignore comments on Hive. I explained my view on these types of comments, both in this case and in general. As a curator myself, if I believe a post is worthy of curation and fits all the curation criteria, I curate it. If not, I move on. There is no need to tell the author, you got a great post but I'm not going to curate you because you did something that does not fit with our criteria. Imagine telling your 5 year old child, you drew a very nice picture today but I'm not going to buy you any sweeties because you used yellow crayons instead of red. Why upset people unnecessarily?
So yes, I am talking about both specifics and generic, but it's not two topics. It's about whether these auto comments that upset people are necessary, and not this being an auto comment, which the curator was eager to point out four times in his message. This was my only comment to this curator and I have nothing more to add as I have expressed my view. By the way, I have not tagged the curator as he asked me not to. So I am not talking about him behind his back, merely respecting his wishes.
A few moments later @lemony-cricket who wrote the auto bot comment stepped in to explain the auto comment again.
Again, I responded. Remember I said it's rude not to respond to comments on Hive? And I reiterated my concerns, about the generic issue of sending out those auto bot comments that upsets people.
My conversation with @lemony-cricket was very civilised. We both agreed the auto comment was very upsetting for this particular post. Personally I don't like people liquidying their Hive rewards either but I wouldn't got as far as calling it cancer, and in this case, it was absolutely necessary. The war does not wait 13 weeks for power down. I met
@lemony-cricket at SF4 in Bangkok (though I only realised afterwards). He does some very useful bots and has been very helpful in the past, so I have a lot of respect for him. I have to say, he also apologised to the author for the auto comment. It guess there are just some things we have to agree to disagree. All good in my opinion.
A few moments later, @nikv another curator stepped in. The third person from the same curation guild. It was very taken back by her comment. All I did was to reply once to each of the human comments addressed to myself. And I'm accused of continue to argue and throw mud? Now, who's being silly?
Furthermore, @nikv said "Scroll back a little and see how much Curangel has contributed to this series of posts and Zirochka's efforts in general." I did that and you want to know Curangel's contribution? The rewards for the 13 posts in this series currently has a deserving $5366.61 which I know is all being channeled to help fight the war against Ukraine. How much of this was from Curangel upvote? $28.0002 over 3 posts. That's 0.522% of the total upvotes received. And how much did they upvote the post in question that liquified the rewards? $0.
Of course no one is obliged to upvote any post on Hive, but the way @nikv commented, I thought they were a massive supporter all along. Oh well, as she said " The project has a right to apply its own criteria for upvotes" Fair play.
I didn't respond to this human message otherwise I might be accused of throwing more mud around. Plus, as I mentioned to @lemony-cricket I didn't want to hijack the post in question.
Next came another message from the first curator. It's funny how people say I'm arguing when I only made two comments to two different people, yet they come back with more comments after me. Three to be exact. The mentality is like children arguing in the playground, the one who gets the last word in wins. Plus, it takes two to argue. If I'm accused of arguing, then someone must be arguing with me.
Anyway, a couple of things I want to clarify here.
First, I am not a fan of people liquidfying their post, particularly the prolific users who just come to Hive to cream rewards off the chain. However, there are users who have genuine needs for it, this being a classic example.
Second, and this is the most important point for me. Curation is about supporting users, not upsetting them. As a curator, I never tell them I was going to curate this post but I'm not because it doesn't fit our criteria. If it's not a good fit I pass. I'm not saying this is how all curation guilds should do it as everyone operates in a different way, I'm just sharing my experience as a curator on how I support and not upset authors.
And finally, engagement is a big part of expression and developing your network on Hive. I made one single reply to each of the comments and get accused of arguing. But it's fine for others to step in or reply after my comment, and they're not arguing? Sounds like a double standard here.
