Greetings dear friends of Writing Club! I haven't been here for a long time, the truth is that I had lost the inspiration to write this kind of things, but somehow when I'm going through difficulties the inspiration always comes back, I leave you this metaphor that came up one of those dark days...

"Remember that your light is capable of illuminating others, even in the darkness" was the phrase that Alexandra kept repeating in her mind that day, it had been months since the sun had shone for her as it had done before in her life, but a few days ago the sunlight had already faded enough to not be able to see almost anything in the darkness.

Alexandra had become accustomed to the opaque sunlight that the sky had been offering her for many years as a result of a natural disaster that no one could ever explain, her surroundings had to force them to coexist with each other, adapting their daily life to that faint storm.

At the beginning, the people around her did not know what was going on, nor did anyone know how to explain the reason for that natural disaster, let alone the consequences of what would happen in the world from that day on.

Alexandra's skin eventually turned gray due to the lack of natural light, or maybe it was another color, but she could not appreciate it, for her almost everything she saw had that dull color given by that dim darkness, no matter that she knew that something had a specific color because she had seen it before, now for her everything had the same shades of dark colors.

It took a few years before Alexandra and her surroundings realized that nothing was going to be like before, so without realizing it they fooled themselves and began to see colors where there were none, they created artificial forms to light up, even though they did not lighten almost anything around them, but little by little they returned to a relatively normal life.

Alexandra always knew it was a lie, that the color she saw was actually a stony gray that she remembered a couple of years ago when the natural disaster happened and when almost nothing could be seen, but knowing the truth did not make her see something different, her mind deceived her, she knew it, but still she could not see the darkness.

The deception was such that everyone saw color in that nature of dead colors and little by little there was no need to even have artificial light, with time they forgot it, they forgot the past and only got used to live the present, except Alexandra who had been so affected by that storm that she could never completely get it out of her mind.

One day when Alexandra was finally beginning to forget the grayish color that surrounded her, suddenly that great sun with its bright flashes appeared out of nowhere, it was as if it had never left, everything around her was now seen in vibrant colors, colors that were no longer the same as the ones she used to fool herself with.

Those colors that were part of her surroundings with time were losing their real tone, so, when they were illuminated again by that immense sun, they no longer looked as beautiful as before, they were opaque, but they were colors just the same, so Alexandra didn't mind, since she could finally see real colors.

Due to the habit of witnessing everything in opaque colors, suddenly the light of that bright sun began to hurt her vision, at first she was very happy to see her longed-for sun, but that happiness only lasted a few months before she began to suffer.

After that, all Alexandra could think was that life was too unfair, that she had waited so long for that sun to appear and now the light it emanated was so harmful to her that she could not even open her own eyes a little.

After a time in which the sun began to be irritating, the constant headaches began due to the discomfort produced by those extremely luminous rays on her eyes, even during what was supposed to be the night, it was unbearable for her to see that permanent light that now had become blinding.

There was no time of the day when the sun went out or diminished in intensity, there was no night or sunset, the sun was present at all hours of every day every month, there were days when its rays were even stronger, she even came to think that it was as if that star that she considered so beautiful had every intention of making her suffer more and more.

Alexandra saw how the vegetation, which had become accustomed to the darkness, now suddenly did not know how to survive that permanent sunlight, so little by little they began to die again, each and every one of the plants and wild animals that inhabited the whole place and put the locality at risk.

The heat became suffocating, there was nothing to soothe the burning of so much light all of a sudden, it was no longer only the headache that was limiting, it was that Alexandra felt weaker every day due to the permanent damage caused by that overpowering sun that tried to destroy her at every moment.

Alexandra did not understand what had happened and no one could give her an explanation, she did not have the strength or was mentally stable to understand it, the constant headaches did not allow her to think properly and she began to get sick with many other diseases.

Alexandra now could not stand so much light, so many vibrant colors and so many constant pains, but what scared her the most came the day she least expected when constant dark spots began to appear scattered in her field of vision.

She was scared, but she gathered her strength and decided to go to a doctor to be evaluated to understand what was wrong, then the worst news came. Alexandra was not only losing her vision, but her retina had been damaged by so much brightness and the damage was getting bigger and bigger.

It was so much of a lesion that Alexandra developed a tumor, somehow to her this information did not give her as much pain as hearing the other thing the Doctor told her.....

"Alexandra everything you have seen this time is not real, the sun never came again, we continue to imagine the colors, we have continued to be aware that we do so with the darkness always present."

And then Alexandra understood, really that happiness she had felt at first seeing her favorite star shining had been a lie, it was all a deception of her mind and her visual field, her retina had already some time deteriorating and the tumorization had several months growing on it.

All the relief she had felt seeing everything glowing by those rays in the darkness was an illusion, everything was just as dim because of the darkness, nothing really changed, the natural disaster that had happened a few years ago was still present, the only difference was that now the picture was much worse.

Since she became aware of the existence of the tumor Alexandra became depressed, now the disease was accelerating faster, the following weeks only brought her more suffering and much more pain, because even closing her eyes she could see that sun that did not let her be at peace neither physically nor emotionally for a second.

Picsart_22-06-10_03-44-41-907.png

Now her eyes did not have to fight only with that excessively bright light, now she also had to endure the dryness of tears that did not stop coming out at every moment, it was no longer only her eyes, Alexandra's whole weak body was suffering too much from a discomfort that was difficult to explain.

Her friends, family and all around her waited for a miracle, but it never came, one day Alexandra stopped seeing the incandescent brightness of that sun, her perennial generalized pains ceased, but with them they dragged with them the beating of that weak heart.

Alexandra's last memory before she stopped fighting against the pain was that phrase that had been repeated to her for some time "Remember that your light is capable of illuminating others, even in the darkness" and she hoped that when those other people left, they would not suffer with that light that she emanated, because in the end she understood it, it was her own light that caused so much pain.

No one around her understood what she lived, everyone had gone through that natural disaster years ago, but their vision got used to it, they all lived with the environment in opaque colors, but none of them developed such an injury, their organisms had already got used to the ever present darkness.

What happened to Alexandra? No one ever knew or understood, the Doctor let her family know that she must have noticed the spots in her visual field from the beginning because the tumor was so large that it must have evolved many months before she saw those dark spots in her vision.

The only possible explanation he found was that because she wanted that sun so much, she mentally created the vision of that light and the tumor took advantage of it using the clarity that she herself provided to grow more and more, clarity that far from giving her peace of mind as she always wished, ended up sinking her into the deepest and irreversible darkness when Alexandra left them all and one day decided to end her pain herself.
