It all started last month with the Boo Bucket. I don't even remember how I found out about them; I must have seen something on social media about the release of this nostalgic Happy Meal toy. Being a huge fan of Halloween and any classic toys that remind me of my childhood, I decided we must get one.
The two restaurants down the street from our neighborhood are a McDonald's and Burger King that are right next to each other. I always found this ironic and wondered who was there first. Which one decided to step up the competition with a little passive-aggressive construction next door? In the last four years that we've lived there, I could probably count on one hand the amount of times we've eaten at either of the fast food chains. That is until last month, when we discovered the excitement of Happy Meals.
I had tried buying Gabby a chicken nugget Happy Meal before, but she doesn't touch them. She only eats the chicken nuggets I make at home. So, when we went to get the Boo Bucket, I decided to get her a hamburger. Lo and behold, she took a few bites. For any parents with picky eaters, you know this is a huge victory. This gave me hope that maybe she would eat hamburger, so I needed to keep trying.
Once Halloween ended, we went back to see if Gabby would continue eating hamburger. As I ordered a Happy Meal on the self-serve menu, up came the option to select a Happy Meal Toy. My face beamed when I saw the Disney 100 Year Anniversary option. I think it goes without saying that we chose this. McDonalds and Disney have caught on to the Mystery Mini Collectible trend that a lot of toy brands are gravitating toward. There's an addictive quality about the uncertainty of which character you're going receive. Two of them come wrapped in tissue paper in a cute McDonald's box, and the figurines kind of resemble the cute style of the Funko Pop! brand.
I'm hoping our McDonald's phase is just that: a phase. Once the Disney 100th Anniversary toys end, I'm thinking we'll go back to our usual eating routine. I can now say that Gabby is willing to eat a whole hamburger 馃弳
