Hi all 👋🏻

1f6115ee_fc15_4040_92d4_0deb36a09f19.jpeg

Today I want to share with you something unique.
We walked the Sendero Acequia del Guadalmina and a part through the Las Angosturas Canyon, which made us walk next to and on top of the watercourse that runs through these mountains.
An old piping system for irrigation of the lands.
It is located in the Benahavís township In Spain 🇪🇸

With this post I’m joining in at the Wednesday Walk challenge and Make me Smile challenge. That are hosted by tattoodjay@tattoodjay and elizacheng@elizacheng every week on Wednesday.
‼️Have a look: Here in the Wednesday Walk Community if you want to join in!

I will guide you now through my photos and walk as I follow the time stamps of them. So you can walk along with me and look at all the details and surroundings I show you 😎 as if you would be right there with me.

Photos are taken with my iPhone on 16 January 2022. The weather was moody… it had rained and would rain more later that day, but we decided to go out for a walk to stretch our legs 😎
I love moody photographs and weather. It gives something special/ extra to the photos…

Location of this walk on Google Maps, see the yellow star ⭐️ :

If you look closely at the map, you see it is close to the Sendero de las Libélulas/ The dragonfly path -walk I posted a while back. This post!

Let’s look closer by:

The walk starts with the yellow star ⭐️ towards El Higueral Golf past the bridge down on the other side of the canyon and back.

Let’s start our walk, Enjoy ☺️

We parked our car and saw this first sign. We looked at it and decided where the walk starts. It at the wooden bridge over the canyon.

You see in the distance. So we walk over the sidewalk next to the road to it.

Our view next to us.
bc5d2db3_2f0d_4491_b966_687b095ab25d.jpeg

Next to the road are pine trees, I saw this in them. A little nest.

On a fence we see this information. This area is in a special conservation area and it is a non-renewable source.

The bridge is getting closer by.
9b40554b_3393_4315_83f7_938ff3be2f87.jpeg

Another sign with the route layout better. We decided to follow it entirely.

We walk to cross the bridge.
22cadd52_ef80_4e50_b175_4cd5e04b6eae.jpeg

Next to the bridge we find the sign saying the walking route is 7,6 Km long.

In the middle of the bridge we see on the right side of us this. In the distance the area we parked our car. The tall trees top right area.
f36e2bfe_5e28_4fac_9e38_18defdbf5e1a.jpeg
A family is having a picnic next to the river.

On the left side we see this view. A rougher part of the Las Angosturas Canyon.
6343fa5f_f6c8_4176_8a94_4d6c2c2ac12a.jpeg

A little over the bridge we see part of our walk in front of us, it is a sandy path now.
52087d5b_1658_449b_a78e_a24bcc759e3c.jpeg

And it is going uphill quite steep!
66f41507_84c4_41ee_8360_0f13065732a2.jpeg

The views on top, again towards the area we parked the car. Now you can see the sea in the distance appearing. Just a little…
4e928922_c637_40b1_a25d_aea97adf0402.jpeg

We reach the area now where we walk next to the acequia/ the watercourse…
d10812b9_fc82_4b73_8c00_20d0481f7600.jpeg

Some little creatures are playing under the vegetation on top of the water. Do you see them?
62dd1c34_b664_4759_a207_6b24aba3d172.jpeg

Lots of pine tree needles have gathered here on the lower vegetation next to our path.
9bab7f78_4e43_46af_893c_387022206586.jpeg

We see a little bridge but this one we are not crossing as our path goes further on the right side of it.
011f3577_cf4b_4bfa_acb7_37f7b5bebacd.jpeg

Now I see this for the first time in our walk. They created a walkway on top of the water course… very special! Beautifully done.

We are passing by some cork trees. The bottom part is already harvested.

The trees and vegetation opens up a little bit and we get a glimpse again from the views in the distance. This is on the right side of us.

The water course is here guided through some channels. It keeps changing along our walk. Quite interesting!

Now we crossed the water again, and walk on the right side of it.
d9b8b351_7658_4a41_b07a_624073d31b0e.jpeg

Our views in the distance. As we are high up we can see a little white village popping up behind those mountains. That is Benahavís and behind it the Dragonfly path, you can’t see. As the largest part of the town is still hidden behind the mountain.
6fb9d828_83a3_4790_ac9e_7420005f4584.jpeg

A little bit further after a few crossings our path in the front of us.
8bd01ebe_b484_4a5a_87aa_2cb7e3391d66.jpeg

The path is tightening up… more dense vegetation around us.
503870a6_87fe_45c0_8b7e_e17b5ce852ee.jpeg

After a while it opens up again and we see these views. View is towards the sea as that is the direction we path first and half way we go inland up again.
39dfd1bd_ead9_4f52_8deb_760691ce5d91.jpeg

It does look like they are building something…
Below us if you look closely the walking path we will walk coming back.

We see the watering system here. Also this is the location of the first photograph just seen from the front. This next photo is seen looking back at it. And part of the path we walked.

In this sign you can read what it actually is.
33c8d06f_2a36_4bc0_88f9_4d0427fff38f.jpeg

It states: ” An "acequia" (from the Arabic assáqya) is a watering system used for irrigation purposes only. It is divided into different channels and uses the topography of the land to take water to different areas. This brilliant engineering idea is still used today. In the past, there used to be an "Alcalde de Aguas" who was a man in charge of controlling the irrigation timetables and the cleaning of the system. Water was - and still is - of great importance for dry lands. This "acequia" makes for you a most enjoyable walk and also contributes to the ecological richness of the area”

Some fence next to us.

Some pots of the bushes… the seeds are blowing away in the wind. Nature at its best 😎

We cross a chain that we just can step over, crossing the path. A padlock holds it together.
a79f6c5b_69f9_42ed_944c_669925ed3013.jpeg

We see a sign, just 2 km left 💪🏻🥳
