About nine years ago, I started consuming smooth jazz like it was an addiction —way too much smooth jazz. I traveled through Billboard's jazz charts, searching for and filtering new artists who convinced me through their natural ability to craft those melodies that sublimate musical art. My view is that when you're making smooth jazz, the key isn't the tempo but achieving a melody whose beauty no one can dispute—something beyond the subjective. No artist in the genre is perfect on this front. Still, Tim Bowman, Boney James, and Marion Meadows stand out for offering very little "filler"—that is, tracks that exist only to pad albums because not even the musician believes in them. They can miss, but these three always bet on serving caviar.
The first thing I heard from Bowman —a guitarist— was the album "Into the Blue" (2017). I connected naturally with the whole record, though if you ask me for my favorite tracks I'd pick "All I Need Is Love" —featuring Stokley— and "Love Forever More." As for James, a tenor sax specialist, my first connection was his album "Honestly" (2017). There isn't a single song there, not even a fragment, that isn't worth it, though I'll go with "If I Can't Hold You" —featuring the ineffable voice of Eric Roberson— as the best of the whole album.
And what can I say about Meadows, perpetually married to the soprano sax and to good taste. "Soul City" (2018) was my gateway into his work, and if you want my recommendation on the best of the menu served there by the Beckley native —in West Virginia— I'd invite you to sample the tracks "Dreamin'" and "Only." After a long time, I've gone back to searching for new material from these smooth-jazzers, and here I share the tracks that stand out most for their melodic quality.

Bowman hasn't released an album since 2022, though he hasn't stopped putting out the occasional single. The album in question is "The 80's 8.0," a tribute to big hits from that golden era. It's a tough call here —the album is a gem from start to finish— but, so far, the version of "Careless Whisper" —the iconic song written by George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley— is the one that's grabbed me most.

James is the one who remains most active on the recording front. This past July, he released "Low and Slow Summer Saxophone," an unmissable compilation that serves as a bridge to the release —next October 2nd— of "A Simple Man," his twentieth studio album. Two singles are already available, and below I'm sharing "I Belong to You," where he's joined by the versatile and well-preserved Ledisi.

"Just Doing Me" is Meadows's latest studio album, released in late October 2024. As expected, it's full of well-crafted melodies, though the combination of melody and a fresh rhythm —which reminds me of "Dreamin'"— leads me to pick "AI Moonrise" as my favorite hit on the record. The title track is cut from the same cloth, and "Scarlet" is another standout offering.

I don't want to leave out recommending Meadows's "Yesterday Is Gone" from his album "Twice As Nice" (2021), and a version of "Michelle" that appears on an old 1996 album I wasn't familiar with, on which he shares the spotlight with other little-known saxophonists. I was unable to pin down his real, specific participation in that production. Still, it's worth it as a closing note for this contribution to the community. Until next time.
