The final day of the Major League Baseball regular season always delivers emotional games, the kind that decide who moves on and who dies on the shore after so much swimming. Always. That was the situation connecting the Houston Astros and the Texas Rangers this Sunday, tied atop the American League West but with a strategic edge for the former under the rules in effect. Houston was on the road against Oakland, while the Rangers closed out the season in Minneapolis against the Twins, needing a win of their own and a stumble from their rivals at Sutter Health Park to sneak into the postseason.
Peter Lambert, Houston's choice despite just two days of rest, had been fairly consistent all season, and he didn't make Mark Kotsay look bad. The Athletics countered with right-hander Seth Johnson, who had started only one game in his career. Oakland tried to rattle Lambert early, putting runners on first and third with only one out, but the visiting starter pulled through by leaning heavily on his sweeper and cutter. Johnson, meanwhile, couldn't get past two innings and handed the ball to Brady Basso, who fell victim to a lethal Space City rally in the third.
Lucas Spence, coming off a three-homer game the day before, put the finishing touch on a big third inning for his side with a two-run double that opened up a comfortable lead for the Astros. Truth be told, it was a one-sided game. Lambert had turned things over to the bullpen early after two scoreless innings, and there was little Oakland could do against a bullpen combo led by Ethan Pecko, the winning pitcher, which allowed just three hits and three walks. The Athletics went 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base. Meanwhile, Josh Bell, with a two-run homer and three RBIs on the day, finished burying Texas's chances, which flickered back to life briefly on a home run from the ever-reliable Corey Seager. Houston already had its Wild Card Series against the White Sox penciled in on the calendar before wrapping up business at old Raley Field.
A total of nine runs were scored against Oakland without much of a sweat. And so the West division was theirs for the eighth time in ten seasons, though with a more rebellious flavor this time given how complicated the season had been, especially at the start. That's precisely why the broadcast team's announcers believe that Yordan Álvarez—who had also gone deep on Saturday—, despite losing the race for the home run and RBI titles to Pete Alonso—he did hold on as the league's batting-average leader—has no rival for the MVP race. The Cuban, healthier this year, was crucial for Houston, standing out in complex and interesting sabermetric stats like RE24. I haven't been able to follow baseball this year, but I'll make the effort not to miss this fascinating series pitting two Cubans against each other—Yordan vs. Miguel Vargas in Houston— starting next Tuesday.
