The Unspoken Weight: A Reflection on Anxiety.
Sometimes we try to minimize what we feel by calling it 'stress' or 'nerves,' but anxiety is not just a simple unease. It is the overwhelming, physical, and real impact of a body that has reached its limit from carrying so much for so long.
For a long time, I carried an invisible backpack filled with responsibilities, demands, unsaid words, and the illusion that 'I can handle everything.' But that accumulated weight doesn't just disappear: it gets trapped in the body. And when that burden builds up, the nervous system enters such a deep state of high alert that even rest feels like a threat.
I reached a point where even sleeping was no longer an escape. I would try to go to bed, and just as I was drifting off to sleep, I’d suddenly startle awake with a jolt of pure terror in my chest. I felt a violent racing heartbeat, a cold sensation as if my blood wasn't circulating properly, and the paralyzing lie that something terrible would happen to me if I fell asleep. I tried to stay calm, I prayed, I listened to worship music, I tried to shift my thoughts... but my body just wouldn't respond. In that constant state of threat, even the sound of a door would make me jump. My body simply refused to let its guard down.
Understanding this completely shifted my perspective. I remember one time, on my way to university, a woman got onto the bus. The bus was dark, and after just a few minutes, she had an attack of sheer terror and desperation. She had to ask the bus conductor to stop right there because she needed to get off immediately.
That’s when I realized it’s not just about 'nervousness' or not wanting to be okay. It’s that threshold where your body tells you: 'I can’t. Even if I want to, physically my system just can't take any more.' It’s a mind trap that makes you feel like your own health and your life are in danger.

Sometimes it’s very easy for us to talk about 'peace,' 'meditating,' or 'being calm' when life is running smoothly, when there is good health at home, and when the bills are paid. It’s very simple to stay calm when nothing is threatening your environment.
The real issue—where anxiety stops being a simple unease and turns into something serious—appears when things don't go as you expected.
It appears when you have a sick family member and uncertainty eats you up inside. When you have to spend the night wide awake, with your heart sinking from news you never wanted to receive. When financial and family responsibilities pile up on your shoulders until they become unbearable. It is at that precise moment, when life gets complicated, that the body begins to scream what the mouth cannot express.
That is when that physical and emotional load becomes a crushing weight.
Taking anxiety seriously means understanding that it's not about a lack of willpower or weakness. It means recognizing that your body is collapsing under the weight of real and painful circumstances.
The most exhausting part of anxiety isn't just the attack itself, but the judgment that comes after. As if it were a temper tantrum, drama, or a lack of character. People tell you 'don't drown in a glass of water' or 'if you want to, you can calm down,' burdening you with an unfair sense of guilt. Because trying to explain to someone who hasn't lived through it what your body feels in those minutes is like trying to explain fire to someone who has never been burned. It’s not a whim, it’s not that you want attention; it is a physical collapse that doesn't just turn off simply because you wish it to.
Telling someone in the middle of a panic attack to 'calm down because it's not a big deal' is failing to understand that, in that moment, their brain is registering a real threat to their life. A lack of understanding doesn't remove the burden; it only makes it heavier for the person carrying it in silence.
If you are going through days or nights like this today, I want to tell you something from the bottom of my heart: you are not going crazy, you are not alone, and you don't have to carry it all at once. And remember, the storm will not last forever.
