It's funny how someone decided very simply to take the idea of the cult thriller Doomsday Night and transfer it to a romantic comedy that doesn't change anything at all. Remember that movie when new people come to power in the alternative USA of the future. To reduce the level of crime and unemployment to a minimum, they introduce a law: once a year for 12 hours, any crime, including murder, becomes completely legal. One Night Only is the same; only one night a year, you can have a free bed life... In short, you can sleep with anyone.
The government finally got around to bed deals and banned promiscuity before marriage. But one night a year, everyone goes crazy and starts sleeping with each other. Of course, this raises many questions, to which the scenario does not particularly reveal the answers on how the government implements this law in practice.
However, for us, the main question that remains at the end of the romantic comedy directed by Will Gluck is how funny the film itself was as a romantic comedy? Well, the idea is original, so it deserves attention only for this! Otherwise, predictable, simple, not bad, not particularly fun, but famous actors in the main role slightly save the movie from failure...
Owen has been dating a girl for three years. He's planning to spice things up and is planning to propose to end the restrictions. But she suddenly reveals she has completely different plans for the night: she wants to spend it with her neighbor, and advises Owen to stay focused and sleep with some stranger. It's a shame, of course, but not fatal.
Lonely Allie also doesn’t plan to stay at home; she puts on some kind of slip and goes to meet a friend, where she quickly ends up alone again. A repulsive, awkward chemistry suddenly develops between the characters, but not between the actors. Monica has a beautiful figure, but her face is sultry. Turner also squints, his face completely expressionless. For almost two hours, you have to follow the scurrying and chattering of people unaccustomed to close embraces. After all, they've been living together for a whole year.
It's hard to believe that a bunch of people waiting for an appointment couldn't think about safety 364 days in advance and stock up on it at the pharmacy. It seemed dubious when Turner planned to use the glove on a date. The thing is, on that very night, precautions are mandatory.
Too many conventions and not enough action. For example, some criminals who don't follow the law and are banned from expulsion for it. Or those who exploit the general madness for robbery and profit. Chips as tattoos on their arms... It's a bit boring to watch. I liked the teenager, who's the only one here who says anything relevant. The funny guy mocked the adults and offered his services to the ladies.
It seems society hasn't yet forgotten its old standards; it's not going to change to meet demands; they're willing to give up pleasure for a year. Overall, the script can hardly be called well-thought-out. It's a typical rom-com masquerading as a risqué topic. It lacks intensity. The couple throws themselves at everyone, but something constantly prevents them from reaching the end, and it's not their attraction to each other.
As they say, it's neither heart nor mind, neither laugh nor cry. I wanted the film to end quickly; they show nothing but Ellie's dress and an indifferent Owen. The characters didn't seem to feel constrained, but they certainly wanted to take advantage of the resolution, but their desires were weakly depicted.
Once again, there's a lack of sympathy for all the characters except Ellie's neighbor and the teenager. The script feels like a throwback, and it's played by the wrong actors. It's as if it was written for other stars who could have enlivened and breathed life into the project. How convenient that the guy knows the home address of the stranger in the revealing dress. And he hasn't forgotten where they first met.\
A meeting with a steady girlfriend, the one they've been together with for three years, just fell through, and they're easily switching to bachelor mode. I'm incredibly eager to answer the main question: will Owen and Ellie finally find what they've been searching for for 24 hours?
So, it's a new take on Love Day. A real holiday once a year, according to the traditions of Viagra-popping old men. Everyone's busy, so they can film the empty city streets... This joke didn't grab me either.
An endless game of tag, testing how far the main characters are willing to go for pleasure. They find someone on the street and run towards them like vampires. Passions are running high, time is running short, and it seems like the young people are ready to give themselves to the first person they meet. So, it's hard to say there's any spark between the characters. They smile sweetly at each other, but there's no real chemistry.
The plot follows a strange trajectory, with the main characters growing further and further apart with each passing minute. They see each other constantly, but their thoughts aren't about each other, but about how to quickly find the first person they meet, someone they won't be ashamed to give themselves to... A romantic comedy made according to all the rules of the genre, so everyone knows how it will all end from the start. But it all ends utterly absurdly.
The result is an unusual romantic comedy with an adult theme. The humor is built on the relationship between a man and a woman and the absurd situations they encounter on their journey to finding a partner. Fate clearly had something to say to these two. I recommend watching this film. It's absurd and silly in concept, but if you put aside all the illogicalities, it stands out from the crowd of generic romantic comedies with its original idea.
