You'll hear people say "addiction is an obvious lack of self control" and the simple truth is, you can quit - but just try telling yourself that, can't you. Sure, I might have had a choice when I first tried something, but it grew into more than a mere choice that grew into to what addicts have been describing for generations to others.
Our brains reward behavior, and we are going to do things that give us the dopamine that tells us that it felt really good to participate in x,y, or z for a time.
Eventually we aren't sure we "can do" this with out it; we know that all that we know now requires that we do this, or we may as well die. Well, now our brain has an issue; no one says it is an unavoidable fate! Personal accountability doesn't magically vaporize with disease, and the choice that one will overcome it all becomes huge - but it all hinges on the right tools and the right path to travel in this very broken down mind! External factors and influences also have a direct roll in addiction.
Factors such as the environment, lifestyle choices of individuals around, mental illness, poverty, family situation, and trauma have played significant factors.
So again, no simply the question as it is stated - as no one has said there's never a contributing factor in anything done by anyone here in existence. Ultimately, no. The initiation is definitely influenced by choice at some stage.
In a number of cases the introduction is purely choice, but by definition addiction is a condition which alters the way your brain works and impacts on decision making (and thus reduces self control). Whilst the initiation involves a "choice" is it in a position at times where that choice isn't that freely available to us anymore? The brain has an amazing capacity for healing though, and a lot of addicts do successfully recover.
What ever my background my commitment to my sobriety has to be there.
It is my recovery. I may not have chosen it but I may get to choose to carry out recovering well.
