In years gone by, individuals were forced to utilize their unique talents and imaginations. Learning was a tedious endeavor as students browsed libraries searching for information, writers spent countless hours polishing their sentences and artisans practiced new forms of their art. Their projects were laborious yet spurred ingenuity, patience, and learning, and through AI these tasks have become almost instantaneous. As convenient as this is, we run the risk of losing motivation for the processes involved in deep reasoning.
What worries many is that an excessive reliance on artificial intelligence could undermine our skills.
Whenever we rely on AI we lose the curiosity that sparks the question and we cease to think outside the box or attempt to solve problems with trial-and-error techniques. Creativity often comes from difficulty and exploration; we must make use of a tool. AI is far from detrimental, but a helpful device not a replacement tool in the same way a calculator isn't a mathematical.
Like cameras helped painters preserve moments while continuing to practice, computers help individuals streamline tasks that aren't the most essential aspect of their endeavor. AI isn't the replacement we're led to believe. A graphic designer can brainstorm countless new ideas with AI prior to applying personal insight to his concepts.
A teacher can allocate less time to formulating a lesson plan to support students’ learning needs more effectively.
The catch-all issue that we'll come up against is finding equilibrium. We, as a society should promote usage of artificial intelligence, not disregard of the very skills that our own abilities bring to the table: critical thinking, the arts, communication. We and employers will need to embraceAI as just an assist rather than replace. Ease isn't entirely free if our curiosity and imagination come at a cost.
However, we can develop our future not merely on what a tool, like an AI, could provide for us; instead on how the tool benefits us.
