Hello everyone
We are ahead in Fledgling again, so I have a lot to share. Starting with today's update with a very, very confused Fell Dragon Kay. Enjoy!
“The Kai have a technique that allows them to create bodies that allow them to host aids for a day.” Said Queen Kay.
Saita nodded her head. She had seen Shareik use the technique and was sure that she could copy it. However, the thought of seeing Fell Dragon Kay before her would be too much for her.
“Kay!” snapped a twin, she wasn’t sure which as she was looking at her hands under the table.
“What? I’m curious. We never had a Fell Dragon develop, and I want to know more.”
*Ask.
Saita, uncomfortable with the request, repeated what Kay had said.
Queen Kay, almost gleeful, sat forward and asked, “Are you the predatory Fell Dragon?”
“I could have answered that one for you.” Said Saita.
Yes.
“Did Edzeeker make you?”
No. I know the Heavenly were involved though.
The queen waved Saita’s verbal communication to speak directly to the Fell Dragon, who was now wide awake and thrilled to finally be acknowledged by someone other than Saita.
“Why did you save her?”
Before Saita could stop the answer, Kay answered.
To stop her from repeating my mistakes. She doesn’t listen.
The presence of the Fell Dragon was overwhelming. It was like when it had latched onto her in their one and only fight. That energy was extreme and in her face. Saita shouldn’t shake it, and instead squeezed her eye closed and pushed away from the table. She needed to drown out the menace before it reduced her to the scared child she was all those decades ago.
“Hey.”
The queen’s voice cut through the ringing in her ears, and she finally managed to get a grip on her reality once more.
Saita looked up at the shocked faces and immediately got to her feet.
“I’m sorry, I can’t do this.” She backed up from the table.
“Saita.” Said the queen more gently.
“I’m sorry.”
She turned and shouldered her way through the closed door, ignoring the pleas from behind her.
Darkness. The never-ending darkness that always surrounded her. She had gotten used to it in the years that she had been trapped here. For a long time, she had recovered her faculties and enjoyed the rest, the silence. However, as the years trickled by, cut off from feeling anything, she felt the insanity creeping back.
She tried to fight it and even forced herself to dive deeper into the darkness to sleep. She couldn’t force Saita to listen. She had hoped that if Saita had had the time to recover, they could have worked together to build a better foundation for Fell Dragons and Companions. However, her plan to tear the young queen down had worked too well, and she shut out the Fell Dragon to protect her own sanity.
With no way to force communication, Kay found herself slipping into a far more peaceful sleep than she had had in her millennia of life. If the stupid girl wouldn’t listen to her, the wheel would turn again, and more Fell Dragons would be born and created.
Kay gave up.
That was until one day she was torn from her resting place and thrown into the daylight. Her throat was ragged, her heart was pounding, and her skin was slick with sweat. Feeling sensation after such a long time of feeling nothing was alien, and she didn’t know what was going on.
She found that her hands were gripping a basin hard enough for cracks to appear. She released it as if burned.
“No, no, no.” she mumbled, terrified at being back in the cage.
She looked up into the mirror before her and was momentarily confused about who was looking back at her. The scar was similar, but the hair was greyer, and a single, wild-looking grey eye looked at her.
Then it clicked. It wasn’t her looking back at her. So many thoughts and feelings surfaced, and she didn’t know whether to scream, cry, or rejoice. She hadn’t been able to feel anything for so long, she didn’t want to lose this feeling.
“Saita?”
She recognised the voice that came from behind her. She had spied enough on Saita and her lover to know who this was. She dropped her eye to look at the basin she had been gripping earlier. She didn’t know what was going on, but for some reason, she wanted to remain hidden. She didn’t know why she had stepped into Saita’s body, but she wasn’t ready to relinquish the hold.
“You woke screaming and ran in here. Are you okay?”
She didn’t turn to face Bolx. Instead, she turned to the basin and opened the faucet. She placed her hands under the water, watching the water run between her fingers for a few seconds before forming a cup and splashing the water into her face.
The new scar stung, but it was a refreshing feeling. She splashed her face a few times, too scared to hear a voice that wasn’t her own.
“It’s been a few years since you woke screaming from nightmares.”
She didn’t answer him but instead reached for a towel to dry her face. Nightmares? Was that it? She looked at the stolen face in the mirror. Had a simple nightmare terrified the young queen into the furthest corners of her mind, the place where Kay had been asleep all this time?
“Edzeeker or Kay?”
Hearing her name startled her, and she spun to fix the Saith with a glare. He hadn’t changed since the last time she had seen him. The only difference was the missing right arm. It ended abruptly under the elbow.
“Hey?” he seemed confused and tried to reach her.
She stepped back and tripped over her own feet. The back of her head collided with the basin. She curled into a foetal position and clutched at her head while her breath hissed in and out between her teeth. All the time, Bolx did nothing but squat down and look at her in concern.
