Sometimes, I wonder why people make being alone look like such a terrible thing. Once someone is always by themselves, people start asking questions. “Why don't you have friends?” “Why are you always alone?” “Don't you get bored?” And if you are single, it gets even worse. People start acting like something is wrong with you simply because you don't have a partner.
But honestly, I don't think being alone is a bad thing. I think it depends on the person and the reason behind it. Let's be honest, we live in a world where people are almost expected to have someone around them all the time. You need friends, a relationship, a group to belong to, or someone to talk to every minute but I don't have any and I like being alone like this.
And there is nothing wrong with having these things, of course, we all need people in our lives. But does that mean we should feel bad when we want to be by ourselves?
Personally, I think there is a big difference between being alone and being lonely. You can be surrounded by people and still feel like nobody understands you, you can laugh with people during the day and go home feeling empty at night.
At the same time, you can sit in your room alone, listen to music, think about your life, and actually feel at peace. So, if being around people doesn't always mean you are happy, why should being alone mean you are sad?
Another thing I've come to think about is that maybe some people are actually afraid of being alone with their own thoughts.
Think about it, when you are always talking to someone, scrolling through social media, going out, or looking for something to keep you busy, you don't always have time to think about yourself and how you are really doing. But the moment everything becomes quiet, those thoughts you have been pushing away start coming back.
You begin thinking about your mistakes, your disappointments, the things you wish you had done differently, and even the things you are afraid to admit to yourself. And sometimes, facing all of that isn't easy.
Maybe people aren't really afraid of being alone, but afraid of what they might discover about themselves when they finally are. Of course, I know that not everybody who hates being alone is running away from themselves. Sometimes, people are lonely because they genuinely need love, friendship, and someone who understands them.
And there is nothing wrong with that, we are human beings, and connection matters. Nobody should have to pretend that they don't need anybody but I also believe there is a difference between wanting someone in your life and needing someone around just because you don't know how to be comfortable with yourself.
Imagine staying in a relationship that makes you unhappy because you are scared of being single, or keeping friendships that drain you because you are afraid of having nobody to talk to. Are you really happy, or are you just trying to avoid being alone?
I think learning to enjoy your own company is something we should all try to do, It helps you understand yourself better. You learn what you like, what you can tolerate, and what you no longer want in your life. You also begin to understand that your worth doesn't depend on how many people call you, how many friends you have, or whether someone chooses you romantically. Sometimes, being alone gives you the space to grow in ways you probably wouldn't if you were always trying to fit into other people's lives.
So, no, I don't think being alone is automatically a bad thing. Sometimes, it is peaceful, sometimes, it's necessary and sometimes, it is an opportunity to get to know yourself in ways you never really have before.
