Did you know that garlic has antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal properties and antioxidants? During the cold and flu season, we tend to eat more of this wonderful herb, but for best results it needs to be consumed raw.
I know that sounds distasteful and you're probably worried about the trace of the pungent smell that will leave behind in your mouth! Don't worry, there's a way to avoid it! Before taking garlic raw, it's best to smash or cut it up into small pieces. You can start with half of a clove to a whole clove, depending on your tolerance.
So cut up or smash your clove of garlic and let it sit for about five to seven minutes. The reason for this is the cell walls need to be broken in order to activate the enzyme alliinase with the chemical compound alliin, which will convert to allicin, thus giving it its medicinal properties mentioned above. Aside from these powerful and beneficial properties, garlic contains small amounts of vitamin C, A, E, selenium, B1, phosphorus, calcium and is an excellent source of B6 and manganese.
Ready to take your garlic? Get a glass of water, swallow the small pieces alone or coat it with raw honey first. I like to take mine with raw honey as it masks the spiciness and strong aroma. You can take garlic daily or every two to three days for immune support or to fight the cold or flu.
Thank you for stopping by and I hope that you find this helpful. Cheers to good health!
