Who likes my title? It rhymes. You can thank my wife for that one.
Welcome to another Leaky20 life update. Nothing too special, just happenings in my daily life.
But where to begin?
Some of the flowers in our garden have started to bloom with the first few signs of spring.
Trees haven't even begun to produce buds yet though so we are actually still quite some time away from a true spring. Still, these yellow flowers in our backyard are a welcome pop of color.
It's kind of fun waiting to see what our garden will look like once everything comes in fully. I can see some early bloomers just starting - possibly tulips, or daffodils or maybe they are Irises?
Apparently the previous owner of our home was quite the gardener. He won two local awards for the gardens in front of our house. That was several years ago though and he mentioned that he had slowed down in his gardening, as he was getting up their in age. He was in his 80's afterall. Nonetheless I think we will have a decent base to work with going forward.
If you happened to read my post on Regensburg Germany than you might recall me droning on and on about my wife buying an art deco style ring when we visited the city.
I couldn't show the ring at the time because it had already been packed for our move. Well, it's unpacked now so I may as well let you see it.
Ta-da! Here is is.
Hmmm...what else... my wife made a strawberry shortcake the other day.
It turned out quite good overall.
Whipped cream between layers of sponge cake with fresh strawberries, you really can't go wrong with that combination.
We visited my wife's brother the other day to see his new condo.
He is up on the top floor of the building and has a great view of the city.
I don't have much to say about that really. Enjoy the photos, I guess.
This is sort of fun. We opened a bottle of Saint-Émilion Gran Cru at my inlaws a little while back.
I'm not sure if the bottle was a good one, decent for sure, but mainly it was from 2000 so I was very curious to see what it would be like. I actually had pretty low expectations for it to be honest. I know that wine can get better with age and everything, but it can also begin to deteriorate if it's not stored in ideal conditions, rotated regularly and properly maintained.
The bottom of the cork broke when I pulled it from the bottle. It was mushy from touching the wine for such a long time and rotted out a little. The wine poured thin from the bottle, like burnt cranberry juice and there was a shit ton of sediment stuck to the sides of the bottle where it had been laying. It wasn't rotated regularly so everything settled and stuck. That would explain the thin coloring I think.
The wine smelled fine but had a somewhat odd taste that reminded me of tomato water. I have tasted that once before in another bottle of wine. In this case I don't think that it was an intentional.
All in all the wine was fine but nothing special really. But it was fun to try and I appreciated the experience of drinking an old bottle. Personally though, I wouldn't even bother to store a bottle that long, because the risk of it turning is just too great. Its just too much work in my opinion to keep the conditions right for 20+ years and to remember to rotate it regularly. I'll just stick to storing a bottle for maybe a few years and then drinking it before the risk of it going bad occurs. Still I wouldn't be opposed to giving an old bottle another go. You never know, maybe the next one will be amazing.
