The first attempt at moving failed due to a bad snow storm and after that we were living in our old house with a portion of our stuff over at the new place. It was just the stuff that makes daily life easier and more enjoyable, you know, nothing important or anything - cooking utensils, pots and pans and that sort of of thing. Just what you need to make food...
Our internet was shut off on Monday so we went a week without internet and TV. Wow I sound desperate there. Luckily I had a USB full of shows and movies. Yep, desperate.
I watched Alone season 6 on my laptop with the pets sleeping beside me. I tried reading after supper one night instead but ended up falling asleep at 8pm. Apparently I can't read at night after work anymore without falling asleep.
The weather all week was incredible. It was sunny and dry and warm and beautiful. But then, of course, the weather forecast called for another snow storm the day before our move... what the actual fuck weather!?!
It started in the morning on Friday. I took a photo when I first go into my office and could see the clouds coming towards us already.
I took a photo again 15 minutes later.
Then again every hour and a half or so.
It got worse and worse as you can see, with high winds and blowing snow.
I worked through my lunch and left work an hour early. I had to head over to the new place and shovel the driveway so that we could get a moving truck into it the next day.
The street and property looked beautiful with all the snow, but it also took about 45minutes to hour to clear the laneway. Good thing I left work an hour early that day.
I dreaded the idea of not being able to get a moving truck for the second time.
The snow stopped early in the evening so the plows were able to clear the roads and luckily we were able to get the truck the next day. Things worked out!
Our moving helper ended up being sick so just my wife and I had to move everything into the truck - including multiple heavy items that needed to be carried up and down stairs. She did amazing with the lifting though. I was impressed. Fortunately her parents were able to help us unload the stuff at out new house and my mom went to the old house to clean it for the new owners. We were really thankful for all the help.
Is it half full or half empty at this point
We managed to fill a 20 foot truck and still had some furniture left at the house so we had to make a decision whether to drive back and get everything done in one night or rent another truck the following weekend and do it all over again. We chose option one and got it all done in one day.
We worked for 14 hours from 9:00hr to 23:30hr. According to my fitbit I walked 31,600 steps, 23.6km and burnt 5340 calories. The calories burnt is what surprises me the most. On a normal day I burn around 26-2800 calories. On a more active day I might hit 3600 but I almost never reach 4000. The only other time that I ever hit 5000+ was during the longest hiking day of my Pyrenees trip, when I walked up the equivalent of 720 flights of stairs. No wonder I was so hungry all day.
I was so sore that night too. I could barely sleep despite being exhausted. My arms, back and neck were throbbing but then my foot was also killing me the next day. It was the arch specifically. I had to do groceries and could barely walk through the store. In the end it was all worth it to get it done though. Way better than going through the hassle again the next weekend.
The pets were on edge all during the move. The dog was howling in the room we put him in to keep him from getting under our feet and the cat was hissing at anyone who went near her. They both found a comfortable spot the next day though, a nice spot to nap by the fire after a stressful day.
All and all I'd say that it was a successful nightmare.
