English version
I have thought many times that I will never leave this wonderful place. A paradise prison where I've been locked up without committing a crime. Every day that passes and every starry night reminds me of the many moons I have counted waiting for a boat to cross in front of the beach.
I always said goodbye to you with a quick kiss, one without the taste of affection, in a hurry not to miss my flight. I could not imagine that that night under the lintel of our house, I would kiss you for the last time.
The memory of your laughter fades with the passage of time, as if an illness tormented my mind by slowly disturbing it. I strive to remember you in your best moments, but I am terrified that you will soon become silhouettes and distant voices.
I have named a rock after you, and I often sit down in the evenings to talk to it. I tell it many times the story of how I asked your grumpy father for your hand. We laugh for a long time at my imitations, and finally I cry for hours; I cannot adapt to living without you. It hurts me to worry that I can't take care of you, that I can't be there when you are sick, that I can't think of the many tears you shed when I was lost in this ocean.
I am no longer the same man you used to know, today I have long hair and a sun-dried beard. My back has scales from the salt and sand.
This morning I found a bottle near the rocks, a blessing for a poor shipwrecked man like me, the tide brought it in during the night, as if the waves took pity on my pitiful situation and decided to encourage me with false hopes. I ran through the rubble of my shelter to look for a piece of paper that I had saved from the water on the day of the accident.
A piece of charcoal served as a pen and allowed me to sketch out misshapen but sincere letters. It is the first letter I have written in years, literally. I don't have as much space as I would like to tell you my whole story in this place and the many things I never told you.
I don't know if this note will get anywhere, if it will step on the sand of some distant beach, much less if it will arrive at your door. I want to believe that it will, you will come to know that I'm alive, wanting to see you again.
If you get to read my note, I would like you to smile happily as you know. I want you to imagine that the music of our favorite song is playing, that we dance looking at each other, and that I breathe the perfume of your hair while I recite the lyrics in your ear.
If this note reaches you, maybe I will too, one day. I will keep that hope alive until I die, until this island swallows me whole.
With love, John...
