Green Day - Wake Me Up When September Ends

Hoy mi domingo musical. Green Day - Wake Me Up When September Ends

Today is my musical Sunday. Green Day - Wake Me Up When September Ends

Today is my musical Sunday. There will always be songs that aren't listened to just for entertainment; they are listened to because they touch that sensitive nerve we all have when listening, one of those deep-seated feelings we all carry inside even if we play dumb sometimes to pretend it isn't there. That happens to me every time Wake Me Up When September Ends by my bros Green Day plays.

When you listen to that song at first glance, any of us might think it's just another melancholic track, but the real story hits you right in the chest—that's what I mean when I say it touches those inner nerves. Billie Joe Armstrong wrote these lines remembering his father, who passed away from cancer when he was just a kid. I read a while back that after his dad's funeral, the kid ran to lock himself in his room, and when his mom knocked on the door to comfort him, all he could answer through tears was: 'Wake me up when September ends'.

What I like most about this song is listening to how such a personal and intimate experience ends up resonating in anyone's life. In the end, it’s always like that, and it can happen to all of us. September becomes a metaphor; it represents that month, that year, or that dark moment in life we’d all like to skip—that bitter pill we don't want to swallow right in the heat of the moment and from which we'd prefer to wake up once everything has passed. This song speaks about what's lost as we grow up and how time doesn't stop for anyone—we already know that.

Today, on my musical Sunday, I'm in a reflective mood that leaves me thinking. It reminds me that pain isn't evaded; it's lived, assimilated, and, if you have the courage, transformed into something that helps us overcome anything. At the end of the day, time doesn't heal things by magic, but it does give us the tools to understand that, even after the hardest September, life always starts up again.
