Sheri pushed through the crowd of the bustling market and raced into the advanced tech shop. A small shop known to sell rare things gotten from outer space. It opened for business once every three months.
Sheri heard from her black market sources that a new piece called the context detector would be on sale. It could detect and reveal the thoughts of humans. The source said to ask for "the vase".
When she did, the seller eyed her and tipped his head for her to follow him into the back of the shop. He gave her a small case and instructed that it would only work in a crowded place.
Sheri paid fifty daras, her life savings, and hurried to the market square. She hid, opened the box and pulled out a weird-looking device. She pressed a button. It whirred, pumping out smoke before it exploded in her face.
Fuming, Sheri ran back to the shop. It was closed. The sign on the door said "No refund of money."
