Birthplace of Compay Segundo: The Music and History of My Beloved Siboney .
Hello, my beautiful people !
Today I want to share with you a little more of the history of my town, Siboney, a place deeply tied to culture and, in a very special way, to Cuban music.
Well, I'll tell you that Máximo Francisco Repilado Muñoz, globally known as Compay Segundo, was born in Siboney. Specifically, on the plot where his home once stood, there is now the recreational center that we have all popularly known for decades as La Rueda, a space that over time was affectionately christened the "Compay Site" in eternal memory of this great musician.
To understand the greatness of this eastern corner, it is worth remembering who this illustrious son of our land was:
Francisco Repilado was born on November 18, 1907, in this coastal homeland. He earned the nickname "Compay" from his habit of affectionately calling his friends and colleagues "compadre" (godfather/pal), while the "Segundo" (Second) came from singing the second voice and playing the second guitar in the famous Dúo Los Compadres alongside Lorenzo Hierrezuelo.
Not only did he shine with the traditional guitar, but he also invented the armónico, a seven-string instrument that gave such a unique and personal sound to his musical performances, enriching eastern son with an unmistakable nuance.
His career experienced an apotheotic revival in the 1990s with the worldwide phenomenon of the Buena Vista Social Club, taking the magic of his music, his eternal smile, his hat, and his inseparable cigar to the most prestigious stages on the planet, and proving that the vitality of our culture has no age with legendary anthems like "Chan Chan".
Although over the years this place has gone through difficult times and lost some of its former splendor, it continues to harbor the living pulse of our tradition. It remains a heavily visited spot by both domestic and international tourists who arrive attracted by the promise of enjoying good Cuban music and tasty traditional Creole dishes. Beyond its ups and downs, the Compay Site and La Rueda remain an undisputed banner, a piece of our soul, and a true identity of our beloved Siboney.
Walking through Siboney and visiting these spaces is feeling the heartbeat of the history of our traditional music in every corner, reminding us that the roots of great artists are still alive in the breeze and warmth of our people.
