Having lived in an area that occasionally would experience hurricanes, I understand the concept of emergency preparation. There were certain things that you needed for the “just in case it is really bad factor” of extreme weather.
The big problems that occur as a result of a hurricane are loss of power, flooding, flying debris and fallen trees. But the thing with a hurricane, you usually have some warning. The weather person will spend a week building up to the actual event and you can prepare for it. Stock up on water, canned food, batteries/flashlight.
Do property preparation, board up windows, bring in lawn furniture and potted plants, even trim trees.
But now that I live in an area that is noted for earthquakes, the preparation is different. There is no notice for an earthquake just the knowledge that at some point in time it is going to happen so advance preparation is imperative. In my home, I have a Basic Emergency Preparedness Kit issued through American Red Cross www.redcross.org
The kit contains:
Emergency water
Emergency food rations
Crank flashlight
Tissues
Drinking cup
Glow stick
Duct tape
Batteries
Personal hygiene items
Poncho
First Aid items
Great stuff, right? It all comes in a handy backpack. But it is important to add the other things that apply to your household like a couple cans of pet food, pocket knife, pair of socks, underwear, diaper, spare eyeglasses, phone charger, some cash.
Have a phone contact list just in case your phone is damaged. Communication is very important, have a plan as to where you will meet up with your family if the phones are out.
I hope I never have to use my emergency kit but I am glad to have it should the need arise.
