Hey all!
I've been traveling and not playing much, but now that I'm back I wanted to share a deck I've been playing and enjoying quite a bit. It uses the void dragons from the new set but is aggressive which keeps games short and sweet. I also recorded an awesome game where I have a huge comeback against anubians (1 hp vs 20 and I win). Beating anubians is always cause for celebration!
Deck Code:
GU_1_1_CCcCCcCAeCAeMCYMCYBAuBAuMCKMCKKCBKCBKDSKDSMCPMCPMCRMCRBAFBAFIAJIAJMCZMCZLADOAQBEWBEWMCxGAd
I've been tweaking the deck a bit. Here's my overall win/loss record:
I first saw this deck being run by Hpain. I took notes from his list and Aldous' and then put my own twist on it - mainly because I didn't have all the same cards. I liked it enough that I finally bought Neferu for it (helps that it was near all time lows!).
The stars of the show:
These guys are fantastic aggressive creatures. They've been reluctant to give Death one-sided face damage in the past (usually it hurts both gods), but backfire brings the pain. It's arguably too good, but it's nowhere near as busted as other cards in this set.
With the removal of nearly all ping god powers (sans magic), Omenseed is also a decent card in its own right. 4 damage means it requires removal, but the afterlife means it requires 2x removal.
Then we add a little support and things get really fun:
Half Life + Omenseed was a combo I identified for this community early on when I talked about what I bought from the set:
Well, it's lived up to my hype. It's particularly amazing against aggro opponents. You can drop it on board even when behind and will almost always 2-for-1 with it. Then half-life lets you blitz it from the void creating another 2-for-1 opportunity.
Blackfire + half-life is even better against aggro. You can blitz for a trade and then the afterlife clears a second minion and also does face damage.
Some care needs to be used when deciding whether or not to use Half Life. Half Life gives them souless, so they aren't in the void for Canopic or Voidwatch Serpent. Against aggro, you don't have a ton of time so its usually just play whatever you can to stay in the game. Against control, though, you might want to hold those half lives until after you find a canopic (or more dragons for the void).
Card draw is critical for this deck. If you don't find blackfire or omenseed, you're going to have a much harder time. Well the GU devs thought of that and gave us new draw tools specifically for dragons. Combined with our existing tools, we've got draw covered:
That's the core of the deck. 1x Empire Reborn has finally found a home, which is great. Necroscepter can solo games. You'll see Frost Queen Nef pull out an impossible win below. OG Nef gives us some finishing damage and board clear.
In this game I face a meta anubian deck with all the fixins. They get to go first and have an incredible open. I have 1 HP to his 20 when the turnaround happens. Frost Queen Nef goes berserk while Necroscepter saves me from certain death!
I know I need to keep scepter vs anubians. I'm not sure what to do with the other cards. I decide to keep them both in hopes that bombfly + Bad Luck can take out priestess/necromancer. In hindsight, I should have dug a bit for Blight Bomb or Curse of Greed. I had 4 tries after all.
I draw Looter and realize I need to draw my way out of this. Pyramid Warden will let me draw multiple times.
Even in hindsight, I'm not sure what to do here. Maybe I should Bad Luck to kill one of them. Probably the right play, but I decide to get scepter equipped to get the healing going asap.
Wow he got wide! I use bad luck to take out one Pyramid Warden while getting the other to 3 HP hoping for a blight bomb. I get looter back and use GP to get a 2/2 zombie out.
The priestess is painful to see, but the zombie keeps me in the game. I finally draw enough cards to get an answer. I CoG the priestess. Then Half Life for even more draw! The voidwatch serpents are basically dead cards. I can play them if I have two, but the power is in the afterlife effect.
The key difference right now between me and my opponent is hand size. They have one card left. I've got 5 + scepter equipped. Card draw is the deciding factor in this game for sure. I finally find Blackfire!
Hurting myself with the GP might seem counter intuitive, but the 2/2 zombie should net me more life gain than he costs to make.
Let the comeback begin! 1 HP? Just a flesh wound. (Remember playing the scepter early and spitting out that 1/1 zombie? Little guy came in clutch!)
I obviously can't play my bombflies or they will kill me. Frost Queen is a risk because she is an anubian, but our opponent only has 1 card in hand. I don't think it's possible for him to kill Nef + drop a priestess in the same turn.
Canopic my Blackfire combined with Nef's auto dmg next turn is lethal. GG!
I hope the gameplay highlights the fun elements of this deck. It has the tools to beat both control and aggro decks. Hpain/Aldous/Squid are running their versions in mythic and it's holding its own there, too. I'm finding it a really enjoyable change of pace.
