Like many, a Sublime Sunday for me often means a quiet walk in the woods.
This one started with Betty and I exploring the woods behind our garage. We have some decent ATV/UTV trails that go the other direction, but this direction was so overgrown with underbrush and trees that it was not passable by vehicle, not even ATV.
I knew there was an ATV trail farther back, so our mission today was to explore now that the woods are thinned out for winter and find a decent path that we can clear out to tie into the other ATV trail.
We found the unmaintained trail a little farther back and it seems just a bit of chainsaw work needed to clear 5-8 fallen trees and get it opened back up and passable. Once we got to the clear part of the trail, we followed it back a ways and found the nice little waterfall across the trail.
Next to it, we also found an old concrete structure that was abandoned some decades ago it seems. It looks like maybe this was an old Wellhouse perhaps? It's too small to have been much of anything else, only about 3 feet square. Given it's close proximity to the stream and waterfall, I'm guessing it may have tied into an older spring that these hills seem full of.
We followed that trail out to the end, found where it ties into the back neighbors property, (where he apparently has a couple deer blinds). We then followed it out the other direction and found the old rock wall that was along an old, overgrown wagon road from the 1800's. Along that, we spotted this rusted old metal that looks like it could have been parts from some type of old wagon or other farm equipment. Not sure about that, if anyone has ideas, please post them up..
And here is a short video of the waterfall, great sound to it. Betty and I had a nice break there for awhile, and she helped herself to a nice cool drink.
Overall, it was a great little hike, only about 3.5 miles, but the hills definitely had me huffing a bit a few times. Was hoping to find a bear cave, but nope, maybe next time.
