THREADS IS FLYING: THE HYPE
The hype surrounding Mark Zuckerberg’s Threads has continued to flood the Social Media space since July 6th 2023 when it was launched. This hype has successfully gathered millions of registered users for Mark’s Thread and more people are also curious about joining this platform.
What could be the reason for this hype and curiosity?
Is the Threads app so robust with amazing features that set it above Twitter and other microblogging platforms?
Or
Can we attribute the massive hype to Mark Zuckerberg’s reputation as the Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Meta platform which houses three of the top social media platforms in the world with large userbase and millions of daily active users (Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp)?
Or
Can we attribute the hype to the excellent team of Public Relations under Mark's Meta?
In my earlier post on Key takeaways from Their Threads to Our Threads, I argued that with my experience of using the Threads app by Meta, the hype of the Threads app is largely because of Mark’s reputation and his already established success in the Social Media sphere. With his reputation, and the little PR from the team, a basic microblogging platform like his Thread will definitely be seen as the perfect alternative to Twitter.
MARK’S THREADS VS LEOFINANCE’S THREADS
Mark’s Threads is a microblogging platform under the umbrella of the Meta family. In my opinion, the platform possesses basic microblogging features with smooth onboarding process, easy to understand interface and is heavily centralized.
In contrast to this, aside having all the basic microblogging features, Leofinance’s Threads is decentralized; meaning that there is no CEO like Mark or Elon, rather, it is owned by the Community of which every user is part of. Likewise, individuals own their account, and their account can neither be suspended or terminated, nor their posts/threads be censored. It is also built on a blockchain (Hive) that is scalable, transaction-free and secure.
Amidst having dope features than Mark’s Threads, Leofinance’s Threads doesn’t have much Hype and userbase like Mark’s Threads. However, this seems like a perfect opportunity for Leofinance to advertise its Threads as Mark’s Threads is being hyped at the moment.
Hence, this prompted the question:
SHOULD LEOFINANCE’S THREAD SOAR THE WINGS OF MARK’S THREADS?
This may seem like the opportunity we’ve all been waiting for to hype Leofinance’s Threads and put it out so that more people can see our Threads and jump in. However, in actuality, aside having positive sides, promoting Leofinance’s Threads under the hype of Mark Zuckerberg’s Threads could also have negative implications for Leofinance’s Threads. Hence, I seek to explore both the positive and negative implications of this action, and, at the end of this piece, I hope to get your feedback and contribution.
POSITIVE IMPLICATIONS
Obviously, this looks like the best opportunity to advertise our Threads because doing this will increase our visibility, as we may easily get significant attention from people. With this, we can attract more users to our Threads. Also, individuals who are curious about Mark’s Threads may also try out our Thread to know which is better, and which they’ll opt in for.
The more we advertise our Threads under the wings of Threads, the more we put it out to the faces of potential users. When we do this, we get more users curious to find out what our Thread is, and how our Thread is different from Mark’s Threads. With this, we also drive competition on the Thread Market as users may begin to see what distinguishes our Threads from Mark’s Thread, and they may begin to appreciate our decentralized, censorship resistant and possibility to earn features, among other features.
NEGATIVE IMPLICATIONS
Aside having great positive sides, advertising Leofinance’s Threads under the wings of Mark’s Threads may bring about Confusion in brand name. By this, people may begin to mistake Leofinance’s Threads for Mark’s Threads and vice versa. A brand name is the identity of a brand, in a situation like this, it might be detrimental for the either Threads by Leofinance or Threads by Mark, especially if the brand name has already been trademarked by the other brand, and this can also lead to legal issues.
With the brand name crises, users may become skeptical about our Threads as it bears the same name with Mark’s Threads. Since Mark’s Threads is more popular, potential users may feel that we just want to use this as an avenue for cheap popularity when we have nothing to offer. Thus, many potential users may turn it down without trying it out.
Our attempt to ride under the wings of Mark’s Threads may also not be successful if Mark’s Threads try to overshadow our Thread and give us no room to advertise our Threads and get better attention than his Threads.
In as much as riding under the wings of Threads by Mark may help us promote and advertise our Threads more effectively, we should be weary of the negative implications.
Do you think a name change is necessary?
Or
Do you think our Threads should soar under the hype of Threads?
