So, last Saturday we had our hangout as usual, and it was just so much fun that we did not want it to end. We are currently on the third topic for this week, which is “FAVOURITE MEMORIES”.
But before we proceed with the details of the topic, let us take a look at the winners of the last topic, which was “DEEPFAKES”.
This topic was geared toward each member of the community, sharing their thoughts with us on the benefits and dangers of deepfakes. With technology evolving as it does during the modern day, it’s no surprise that deepfakes are now getting more and more prominent, with many people seeing places where they’re being used.
We got to see that while deepfakes could have some use in the world, they were mostly used for terrible things, to either defraud people or defame them. The terrible things it can be used to do far outweigh the good that it can ever do, which is why many will never fully accept it as a good form of technology. It was an enlightening topic, indeed.
For this topic, we went through every entry post, and that is every post with the #hl-exclusive & #hl-w196e2; tag. And with the number of wonderful posts out there, it was quite difficult to make a selection. But eventually, we did just that. This author shared her opinions on this piece of technology. According to her, it’s a good innovation and a step in the right direction for technology. However, the disadvantages lie in the intent of the users, and not in the technology itself. And thus, she believes that it should not be made easily accessible to everyone. That will curtail its use.

But once consent is not given, or it’s done in ways that weren’t agreed upon, then it’s illegitimate, which makes it dangerous because deepfakes are one of the things that can easily destroy a person’s life.”

For this author, he mentioned that the dangers of deepfake technology arise only from how it’s used. There are good ways to use it, but sadly, many prefer to use it for all the wrong things, and those are the things that make it infamous. In the end, what’s most important is that we use it correctly.
