Two days ago, I decided to take a stroll through the woods to calm my nerves and brainstorm on my ideas for the new script I’ve been working on. As a scriptwriter and a movie freak, my entire life revolves around making sure that the scripts I write become life and connect deeply with the characters that cast them.
This particular script has been on my mind for quite some time. Although I've spent a lot of hours writing and rewriting the script, I still could not find that missing piece which I believe could truly impact the narrative to the point of making the viewers sympathise with the main character.
I’ve always loved writing stories. I wrote my first piece in junior high and got a lot of accolades from everyone who was opportuned to read the script. A lot of encouragement and advice from my parents, teachers and friends gave me a nudge in the right direction and I’ve been writing ever since.
Twenty years later, I married Mary, my college sweetheart. She’s been a huge addition to my otherwise boring and reclusive lifestyle. I remember the day I met her for the very first time in Mr David’s Literature class, her eloquence of speech, beautiful smile and unique insight to poetic critiquing got me attracted to her immediately.
I approached her after the class and told her I enjoyed her constructive answers and made her aware of my views regarding the idea of considering ‘literature as a tool for connecting with our mind and soul’.
She looked at me with such awe and felt happy that someone other than herself could see the logic in her answer. Things kicked off from there.
We enjoyed each other’s company and had a fixed time for meeting after class to discuss our views and peruse through each other's notes for details we may have failed to jot down.
We soon developed an uncanny desire to see each other daily. The feelings grew even stronger each passing day. Knowing deep in my heart that the feeling is mutual, I made up my mind to ask her out.
Several years after graduation, we got married and had a set of twins. Lani and Teni, our beautiful girls who took not only the beauty of their mom but her intelligence as well.
My work as a reputable and well sought after script writer, gave me little time to be with the kids. Mary’s job as the editor in chief of her firm also deprived her of having little to no time for herself or even the kids.
Our once happy and lovely family started to gradually grow apart.
As I walked even farther into the woods, the smell of the fresh green grasses, the beautiful butterflies all around and chirps of the birds and the toads played a melody that resonated deeply within my heart. After sitting beside a big old oak tree with a huge canopy that prevents the sun from seeing its roots, I took out my note as I prepared to pen down the ideas coming to me.
Just as I was about to write something down, I soon noticed a little bird that seemed to have fallen from its nest. I sat there for a while staring at this beautiful little bird chirping continuously in a desperate attempt to attract the attention of its mother.
Its attempts to fly proved abortive due to its tender and weak wings which are yet to gain enough strength for flight.
I looked around to find her nest and soon noticed it just above the tree facing me. Walking up gently to the little bird, I carried it with both my hands clasped together and placed it upon the nest. Moments later, the mother bird arrived with food in her mouth.
Her apparent absence to find food for her little offspring, had left the bird helpless in her time of danger. “Anything could have happened while you were away looking for food” I said to myself in tears.
Realising what Mary and I have been missing out on because of our jobs, I resolved to make a definite change to the situation as I walked out of the woods humbled by the little bird who may not know that it’s
fall from the nest had created in me the need to focus on my family and be around to pick them up when they fall.
